The Ravenna Community Choir will present a special benefit concert at 3 p.m. June 11 at the Ravenna Assembly of God. All proceeds from the concert benefit the Amelia DeGirolamo Center of Hope in Ravenna.
The Center of Hope/Christian Cupboard provides hot meals and food assistance to disadvantaged residents of Portage County. The center uses 94 cents of every dollar donated toward direct service.
Anne Marie Noble, director of emergency outreach services, explained that June is a perfect time for an influx of donations and food.
"With school out for the summer, there is extra stress on families because the children aren't getting the free meals offered at school," she said.
The Center of Hope serves 100,000 people each year, serves hot lunches to anyone hungry and provides groceries to families monthly through the Christian Cupboard. It takes 3,500 volunteers to keep these programs running.
Donations of food, money and gift cards (Acme and Giant Eagle) will be accepted at the concert on June 11. Monetary donations are used to purchase food from the regional food bank where the equivalent of $4 in retail food can be purchased for every $1 donated. Checks can be made to the Center of Hope or Ravenna Community Choir. Gift cards from Acme or Giant Eagle in $10 increments are also accepted.
The center cannot accept expired products. Anyone donating food is asked to check the expiration dates on the following foods: Non-perishables, especially peanut butter, jelly, tuna, cereal, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, conned fruits and vegetables, canned meals, boxed meals, boxed potatoes and ramen noodles, which are easy for children to fix for their own lunches. All food donations will be delivered to the Center of Hope immediately following the concert reception.
The choir is directed by Janis Harcar with accompanist, Rick DeMattia. Following the concert, guests may join the choir for refreshments in the fellowship hall of the church. The Ravenna Assembly of God is located at 6401 S.R. 14, Ravenna and is also accessible from Bryn Mawr Street.
