During the Upper Cuyahoga State Scenic River "River Day" on May 21, there will three events scheduled in Mantua.
The first is a "River Keep" community clean-up from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Volunteers can meet at the Lamplighter Landings Apartments, where the group will proceed to remove brush and collect litter from the "West Edge" Trail along the Cuyahoga River.
At 10 a.m., the Upper Cuyahoga River Race will commence. Racers can choose between an 11.7-mile and 5-mile course, both ending at ending at Buchert Memorial Park.
Personal canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards welcomed, and rentals are available from Camp Hi, and all skill levels are welcome to participate. In the event of unsafe water levels, the race will be cancelled or postponed.
Registration is required, and profits from the race will go to Mantua Rotary Club for education programs. The morning clean-up should conclude before the end of the River Race.
From 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., guided tours will be available of the National Natural Landmark preserve, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Normally closed to the public and visitation, the tour features Ohio's first scenic river preserve, designated in 1986: Tours of the Mantua Bog State Nature Preserve will take place at 11 a.m., and the Tummonds State National Preserve at 1:30 p.m.
Tours are sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas. Those seeking the tour can meet at the intersection of Peck Road and E. High Street at the Headwaters Trail.
