A Newton Falls man was hospitalized Sunday with head injuries following a collision between two motorcycles in Garrettsville, village police said.
LifeFlight took 57-year-old Ralph Heltzel to University Hospitals by helicopter after his motorcycle collided with another carrying two people at 6:33 p.m. in the area of Liberty and Silica streets in the village, according to Garrettsville Police Chief Anthony Milicia.
Milicia said Heltzel's motorcycle was trailing another, operated by 50-year-old Randall Vesey, also of Newton Falls. Veronica Vesey, 49, was a passenger on her husband's motorcycle, Milicia said.
In the lead, Vesey slowed down to turn right onto Silica Street when Heltzel accelerated to pass him, striking the rear of Vesey's motorcycle, Milicia said.
Veronica Vesey was thrown off the motorcycle but unharmed, the chief said. Heltzel lost control and traveled about 50 feet before laying his bike on its side. It traveled another 120 feet without its rider, Milicia said.
Milicia said Heltzel also slid about 120 feet from the crash site, sustaining head injuries. Family and friends reported on Facebook that Heltzel was in stable condition in the ICU immediately following the crash, with facial fractures and broken ribs.
Heltzel likely will be cited by police upon his release from the hospital, Milicia said.
