Fourth-graders from Kent schools visited Heritage Park in Kent on Friday to learn about the Cuyahoga River, its history and the different species of animals that live in the river. Studetns also witnessed a fish shocking, in which fish are shocked, rise to the surface and then are collected and studied. The visit was in cooperation with River Day, which will be celebrated today throughout northeast Ohio in communities in which the river flows. In Portage County, activities are scheduled for Kent and Mantua. In Kent, there will be live music, crafts and nature activities, environmental and historical displays and Coast Guard demonstrations at the Haymaker Farmers Market along Franklin Avenue. In Mantua, a cleanup at Buchert Park will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. Participants will be cleaning trails and the river.
