Ravenna names Wallis interim chief of police

A captain with the Ravenna Police Department who has been with the department for nearly two decades has been named the department's acting chief.

Capt. Jeff Wallis is serving as the interim replacement for Chief Tim Adkins, who has retired from the department. Adkins' last day with the department was Friday, June 2.

Mayor Frank Seman said Capt. David Rarrick suggested Wallis as acting chief, and "that made it easy." Rarrick, the mayor said, has been off dealing with some medical issues, recently returning to light duty.

"They're both good men," Seman said of the captains. "They're both capable of running the show."

Seman said the city's Civil Service Commission hasn't started the process of testing for the new chief's position. The process is expected to begin in late June, with both Wallis and Rarrick planning to take the test, he said.

Adkins had served the Ravenna department for 31 years before his retirement, eight of those years as chief. He held various ranks with the department, including captain, before rising to the chief's position eight years ago.
