CANTON — A Canton police officer shot a man wielding a baseball bat early Tuesday evening at a downtown homeless shelter.
"I believe it was a male victim," police Lt. Dan McCartney said. "It was not fatal. He was awake and struggling with the medics. He was giving the medics a hard time."
The shooting occurred at the Refuge of Hope the 400 block of Third Street NE about 6 p.m. Tuesday. The man was transported to Aultman Hospital.
While the evening meal was being served at the Refuge of Hope, a man entered with a baseball bat, according to police. An officer unsuccessfully attempted to defuse the situation when the man made threats.
The police officer shot the man twice in the stomach area when the situation escalated, said Chief Bruce Lawver. He said the man is expected to live.
