Celebrate Portage! events to highlight county

Celebrate Portage! will be hosting several upcoming events that focus on Portage County's wide range of activities and services.

The organization's mission is "to educate and invigorate the vision for a vibrant and exciting Portage County." Activities will a celebration dinner, volunteer day, movie night, car show and more.

For those interested in the arts, the Kids Art program will continue this year. At various events throughout the summer, kids will be able to contribute works of art depicting what they like best in the county.

The planned event locations where booths will be available to get materials and submit art are: Garrettsville Summerfest on June 23-25, Art on Main in Ravenna on June 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Mantua Art On The Hill & Wine Tasting, Too in July.

A final showing of the artwork will take place in September in collaboration with the Kent State University School of Art.

On Aug. 30 from 5-9 p.m. the 4th annual Octane Nights on Main Street car cruise-in will take place. More than 500 cars are expected to make an appearance.

East Main Street between A&W and Mongoose Motorsports and Pizza Hut will be closed for the event.

The 2nd annual Runway Fest and Cruise-in will take place on September 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Formerly known as Wings & Wheels, the festival is held at the Portage County Regional Airport and is co-hosted by the Northeast Ohio Two Cylinder Club.

Events To Include: biplane rides, free airplane rides for kids ages 8-17, breakfast and lunch sponsored by the Crestwood Lions Club, food trucks, and a tribute to Bill Bower, a Ravenna Native and Doolittle Raider. Antique and custom tractors, trucks, cars, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters and military vehicles are invited to take part in the event. An awards dinner celebrating the best of Portage County will be held on Sept. 7 at NEOMED in Rootstown.

The organization will be recognizing the nominees and nominee winners in six categories, including Best Economic Development Project Initiative, Most Engaging High School, Best Community Service Award, Cultural Arts, Public Health Initiative, and Community Hero.

Nominations for the dinner are being accepted through July 1. Ticket information is not yet available, and nominations can be sent to admin@celebrateportage.org.

Sept. 9 will be a county-wide Volunteer Day. Volunteers will complete community and social service projects.

In addition to the awards and the volunteer projects, Celebrate Portage! Also awards communities with grants for local activities that highlight what makes them unique.

Five communities -- on a first-come, first-serve basis -- in the county will receive $500 to offset the costs of presenting the event. Those interested must contact admin@celebrateportage.org as soon as possible.
