Kent lost an advertising icon on Friday, after the giant cowboy hat sign outside the Arby's restaurant on East Main Street was retired from service.
A manager at the restaurant at 1630 E. Main St. said the sign, under which many a Kent resident and Kent State University student has dined, was taken down for "a number of reasons."
"Mostly just the age and upkeep of it was becoming unrealistic," said the manager, who asked not to be identified by name.
There may be only "two or three" such signs left standing in the United States, the manager said. "People in Kent, people at the university, they're going to miss it."
The brown cowboy hat, with its large yellow lightbulbs, has been replaced with a smaller sign.
"Unfortunately, it's the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one," the manager said.
