As the Streetsboro City Schools continues its districtwide facilities update, the current middle school will be left without students. Instead, the school, which is 74,613 square feet, will be used as administrative space, said Superintendent Michael Daulbaugh. No changes will take place until after the 2017-18 school year, though, during which seventh- and eighth-graders will still take classes there.
"We'd have to utilize classrooms on that first floor for offices, kind of similar to what Aurora does," said Daulbaugh. Some renovations may be needed to properly convert those spaces.
But that won't be the only function of the building. "It'll permanently house wrestling and permanently house baseball and softball," he added. He said community groups and youth sports organizations also may use the facility. Daulbaugh said the advantage to the wrestling, baseball and softball teams will be year-round access. "The cafeteria's actually an old gym That's where the wrestling team practices now. There's enough space to use the library across the hall as a team room."
Wrestling meets will take place at the new high school, he added. For the baseball and softball teams, having access to the middle school gym won't be like having an indoor field, but it will give members a place to hone their skills, said Daulbaugh. "We have a portable batting cage in the middle school cafeteria," he said. "We envision moving baseball and softball into the gymnasium during the winter." He said the district may leave a portable mound and pitching machine in the gym permanently. "We can easily get two cages in the gym.," he said.
The repurposing of the middle school won't take place until at least summer 2018 when renovations and additions to the old high school are complete and it's ready to house sixth- through eighth-grade students. Some improvements to the middle school will be necessary. He said the district also hopes to add air conditioning to the school.
He said any renovations would be paid for with money left over after the new middle school renovations are complete.
