Two years in prison for 2011 Charlestown crash

A Trumbull County man who was high on cocaine when he caused a traffic crash on S.R. 5 in Charlestown in June 2011 that seriously injured his grandmother recently was sentenced to two years in prison.

Stephen G. Flannery, 30, of Warren, recently was sentenced by Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman to the minimum prison term on a charge of aggravated vehicular assault, a second-degree felony.

His prison term will be followed by inpatient treatment at the Northeast Ohio Community Alternative Program in Warren, a drug treatment center for convicted felons, according to the Portage County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci said the victim, 73-year-old Helen Flannery, is Stephen Flannery's grandmother.

Helen Flannery, who suffered three fractured ribs, a bruised lung and a lacerated spleen in the crash and was treated at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, cooperated with the investigation but did not want her grandson to go to prison, he said.

Vigluicci said that at 1:30 p.m. June 23, 2011, Stephen Flannery was driving a 2007 Ford Explorer eastbound on S.R. 5 in a rainstorm when he lost control of his vehicle while attempting to pass a semi trailer. He sideswiped a van and then struck a pickup truck head on.

He was headed home from an appointment at the Portage County Adult Probation Department in Ravenna, Vigluicci said.

A total of six people were injured in the crash, with Helen Flannery, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of her grandson's vehicle, suffering the most serious injuries.

A blood test performed on Stephen Flannery at Robinson Memorial was positive for cocaine, according to Vigluicci.

Stephen Flannery, whose driver's license was suspended, told Ohio Highway Patrol troopers he did not see the other car "until I hit it," Vigluicci said.

Flannery was indicted on two felony and three misdemeanor charges by a Portage County grand jury in November 2011.
