Valedictorian following his sibling's path Joshua Vaughn tops Windham Class of 2007June 4, 2007
By Deborah Guziak Record-Courier staff writer As the valedictorian of the Windham High School Class of 2007, Joshua Vaughn is following in his sister's steps and setting a trail for his younger brother. Joshua's sister, Nichole, was the 2002 valedictorian of Windham High School, and brother, Jacob, who is in junior high school, is on his way to becoming a valedictorian with his grades. Good grades come naturally to Joshua, who credits his mother's emphasis on academics as part of his success. "I wouldn't change a thing," he said of his high school years. "It's been a great experience. I have good friends and good teachers. If there's anything I'll miss, it'll be my teachers. I'll keep in touch with .my friends." This fall, Joshua is going to Case Western Reserve University where he'll study biology on his quest for a medical degree. "I don't know what kind of doctor I'll be yet," he said, adding that he wants to help people. Going from a very small, rural community to the city life is exciting for Joshua. "I'll be on my own, taking care of myself," he said. While Windham is a tiny community with little or no places for teens to gather, living in the tiny community has its pros and cons, and in Joshua's mind, the pros outweigh the cons. He chose CWRU because of its smallness, technologies and its partnership with area hospitals, such as the Cleveland Clinic. "It seemed like the best place for me," he said, adding none of his friends will be attending the university. But that's OK as Joshua plans to keep in touch with his friends and make new friends by participating in activities, such as intramural sports and clubs. However, he won't be in the band or on the football team as he was in high school. Comments
