BRIMFIELD -- Late Wednesday night, Brimfield Police arrested an Akron man who allegedly was observed threatening people with a handgun near a hotel where he was staying. After searching his room, officers discovered a meth lab, according to the report.

James R. Harrison, 37, was charged with manufacturing drugs and the assembly of chemicals for manufacturing of drugs, both second-degree felonies, police said.

At about 10:26 p.m., officers responded to reports that Harrison was threatening people with a handgun in the area of I-76 and S.R. 43 in Brimfield. After arriving, police determined Harrison was staying at America's Best Value Inn at 4363 S.R. 43.

A female answered the door to the room where Harrison was registered. While searching for the alleged gun, officers discovered a meth lab in his room, they said.

Harrison was seen approaching the hotel shortly after. He saw officers and fled on foot and eventually was apprehended in the hotel parking lot.

The gun was recovered in the bathroom located in the lobby of the hotel.

According to records, Harrison had been staying at the hotel for about a week.

The DEA was requested to remove the contents of the meth lab, which was considered a larger than average personal-use lab, authorities said. Harrison was processed at the Brimfield Police Department and transported to the Portage County Jail where he is being held on $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 10 before Portage County Municipal Court Judge John Plough.

The woman staying with Harrison was not charged.

Should the motel personel be briefed on what to look for. They meet these people face to face. They watch activity on the premises. The motels just seem to be interested in the rent.
How do other communities along I-76 handle this?
Brimfield should have special County funding for drug dogs to check these parking lots like they check the high schools.
This is a black eye for the whole County not just Brimfield.
I won't send relatives to Brimfield to stay when they visit. Who would want to stay in one of these motels?

There are more then one hotel in that area full of drug activity from what I hear. My friend lives down the street and said the cops are there all the time. Great job. Nice he got nabbed before he shot anyone all tweaked out on his garbage!
