Rootstown: Navy officer is commissioned ... Nick Billock promoted to rank of Ensign in recent ceremonySeptember 22, 2007
Nick Billock of Rootstown was commissioned as an officer into the U.S. Navy at a Commissioning Ceremony on Sept. 1. The formal ceremony was held on the patio of his parent's restaurant, Billocks Ice Cream in Rootstown, followed by a Wetting Down Party at the adjoining Acapulco Mexican Restaurant. Master of ceremonies Ron Snyder welcomed those attending. The invocation was given by the Rev. Rick Reynolds of Grace Church of Rootstown. The oath of office was administered by Lt. Brian Dolney, Navy Recruiting District Ohio. The installation of ensign shoulderboards with Supply Corps device was performed by Billock's parents with the installation of officer cover by Billock's wife. The rendering of the first Salute/Silver Dollar Salute was given by NC1 Steve Orona, Navy Recruiting Office Ravenna, and was followed by comments from Ensign Billock. Billock served for 10 years as an enlisted nuclear mechanic aboard nuclear aircraft carriers, but is now returning as an officer in the Navy Reserve in the Supply Corps. The 1991 Rootstown High School graduate separated honorably from the Navy in 2001 and moved back to Ohio while finishing up his bachelor's degree in business and his Master of Business Administration degree from Regent University. "My very good background in the Navy, MBA, current career field, and many letters of recommendation led the Navy to select me out of a very large field of candidates for direct commission into the Navy," said Billock. "As an officer in the Navy Reserve, I will serve one weekend per month and about two weeks per year. After qualifications are complete in the Supply Corps, I will then be eligible to serve anywhere in the world should an order come. In the meantime, I will continue my career and community involvement," he said. Billock is a MetLife financial adviser and treasurer of the Harvest Hills Homeowners Association as well as a candidate for the Rootstown Local School District Board of Education. He and his wife and their two children live in Rootstown. A marathon runner, Billock is gearing up for the Akron Marathon on Sept. 29. Comments
