HUDSON -- The wife of Plantation Drive resident Joseph D. Gorospe, 32, remained in critical condition Tuesday after Gorospe pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and domestic violence.

Gorospe was arrested on the three charges Monday by Hudson Police in connection with the beating of his 31-year-old wife.

According to a Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court spokesperson, Gorospe pleaded not guilty to the charges before Judge Lisa Coates Tuesday.

Coates set his bond at $5 million cash. He is being held in Summit County Jail. A preliminary hearing will be held at 10:45 p.m. Nov. 1.

Joseph"s attorney, Henry Hilow, did not return phone calls by press time.

According to City Communications Manager Jody Roberts, police responded to a 911 call made by Gorospe from the couple"s home Monday around 8:32 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found his wife unresponsive. She was treated by Hudson EMS and transported to an Akron hospital, according to Roberts.

Roberts said Gorospe"s wife was in critical condition as of press time. Hospital officials declined to comment.

Police Chief David Robbins said he was charged with kidnapping because "physical evidence at the scene indicated she was trying to leave" the residence.

According to Robbins, there were two children in the home at the time of the incident but they were on a different floor. Roberts said the children are both girls, ages 1 and 3.

"They were taken from the home by Summit County Children Services at our request," Robbins said.

He said the children"s grandparents were working to gain temporary custody of the children.

Coates issued a temporary protective order for the victim and two other members of the household.

According to Roberts, Joseph works for Thomson-West, a business, legal and regulatory information and technology company in Independence. His wife is a social studies teacher at Brush High School in the South-Euclid-Lyndhurst City School District.

My prayers go out to the family. I just wish no mother or children would have to deal with abuse. When are the laws for the innocent going to change?
In Gods Service.
