A Ravenna Township couple was sentenced to prison Friday on charges of selling the powerful painkiller Oxycontin.
Carlos Brown, 77, of 4712 Hayes Road, was sentenced to 10 years in prison while his wife, Brenda, 54, received a five-year prison sentence. Both were sentenced in Portage County Common Pleas Court by Judge Laurie Pittman.
Prior to sentencing, both Carlos and Brenda Brown apologized to the court and their families for their actions.
"To my grandchildren that have now lost their home, I apologize. To my daughters, the trouble and embarrassment this has caused ... and to Brenda, who has been a loyal companion. We've been together for 31 years, and I'm truly sorry for getting you involved in this situation," Carlos Brown said.
He then appealed to the judge on behalf of his wife and himself.
"Your Honor, Brenda and me are not bad people. We just made bad choices," he said.
He explained that a car accident led to his being prescribed Oxycontin, and the drug soon turned into an addiction for him.
"My habit was costing me $3,600 a month. I found out I could buy them wholesale and made the wrong choice again when I began selling them to pay for my habit," he said. "I tried to quit, but they were controlling my life."
Both of the Browns were arrested following a raid on their Hayes Road home in July by the Portage County Drug Task Force. Indictments totaling almost 70 pages on each were filed the same month charging them with selling the drug from their home between May 1 and July 16.
Carlos Brown received the following sentences, all to run consecutively, from Pittman: A three-year mandatory sentence on one count of aggravated drug possession, a first-degree felony; two years each on three counts of aggravated drug trafficking, all third-degree felonies; and one year on a fifth-degree felony charge of permitting drug abuse.
His wife received a five-year prison term consisting of the following sentences: A three-year mandatory sentence on one count of aggravated drug possession; two years each on two counts of aggravated trafficking; and one year on permitting drug abuse. Pittman ordered Brenda Brown's two-year and one-year sentences to run concurrent to each other but consecutive to the three-year sentence for a total prison term of five years.
Both Carlos and Brenda Brown pleaded guilty Oct. 29 to several felony counts related to the sale and possession of the powerful painkiller.
As part of their plea and sentencing, the Browns also were ordered to forfeit their Hayes Road home as well as all electronics, vehicles, tools, machinery and weapons that had been found there. They also were ordered to forfeit more than $90,000 cash that was recovered from the home. The couple was permitted to keep two rental properties they own as well as personal effects such as clothing and jewelry.

ohio Gal, Again i say you sure know a lot to have not known the Browns! I do know them and am very shocked! I am in no way taking up for them I will say you never know whats going on behind closed doors!! There couldn't be to much (dirty money) left in 5 years if it states they were selling drugs from their home between May 1-July 16th ? I don't recall ever reading that she was on drugs, and this is the first time i read were he was taking the drug? I don't recieve the paper and don't read the online paper every day so i am sure i have missed a lot, after reading the comments I must have missed some... Why lie about an accident? I am sure it can be looked up. I am sure all the proper investigtive work has been done and they know what was in the bank. You say any one who lives around here knows about dealings that has been done for years? Why weren't they turned in before? I will say any one who knows of drug dealing and does nothing in my opinion is as guilty as the dealer! Because we do all know drugs are killing our kids and adults! Are you saying they recieved stolen property in exchange for drugs? If so how do you know? Did she state in the plea that she kept quiet to live high on the hog? No one should make statements that are not true, I do believe there is a law against that also. Also withholding information is too! Now thats just my opinion. You have made lots of statements over the last 6 months that have been news to many of us and i did say before that you seem to have more information than any one else including the uthorities. Many of you have stated things that were not in the inditment papers which is public knowledge, I did read some of them not all so being a drug dealer for years and recieving stolen property may have been in them, so i do apoligize if i am wrong. This really should send a meesage out to all drug dealers that you WILL be caught so don't get comfortable!! I do agree with all that if she was guilty she should get the same! But I also agree if any one knew and did nothing should get it also! We all have a right to our opinion, and some of you seem to know more than your saying also. Ohio Gal you also stated back in July that you in no way know the browns and don't even live close to them, thats when someone asked you how you knew about the helicopters flying over? Remember? You then said thats right I was just hear say on your part. I still say you or any one else that knows any thing more than the uthorities, should report all you know! Because I have dealt with family members that were on drugs, my brother died a young man (38) because of pain killers he was on because of a car accident he was in at 19! At that time most of his drugs came from Doctors and Hospitals, so that was conciders legal! He needed a new heart (that was damaged because of drug use) but his other organs in his body was so damaged because of the pills he never made it that far. He was off the drugs Thank God due to pain management the last 4 years of his life and helped many in that time, it is real! Addictions are real, and it is not easy to just quite! I have heard people say pain managment is a joke but people that go to them don't have such an easy time getting hooked on drugs because it is monitored, if it would have been available in the 70s and 80s maybe my brother would be alive to be educating more people as to what drugs do to your body! Today we are more educated on the affects of drugs when I was a ten we were not. Also Doctors are better at educating their patients, and should be. Pain is also REAL, people do need pain killers, a friend of my sister has been taking Oxycontine pain pills for a few years now because of a birth defect that has caused her to have multiple operations on her back and they have been the only thing that has eased her pain, now with all the abuse (that did start with the Doctors handing them out) She is treated like a criminal each month she goes for her refill and asked so many quistions to get it and then the insurance company doesn't want to pay for them, she is truly having personal problems she feels like she is doing something wrong. It is the abusers, dealers and the Doctors that don't monitor their patients that have caused this problem! In Portage County and many other States and Countys don't have the proper education and rehab facilitys to help people mainly the ones who ask for help. We have all seen it and for most of us who have been lucky enouph not to have needed pain pills, there doesn't seem to be a problem, some of us just want to judge others who have the problem instead of offering help! I feel that the drug money gotten from dealers and seized property should be given to County's and States to educate and build rehab facilities for people in need and family members of abusers should have more authority to turn in their family members who are abusing the drugs (all drugs including the legal drugs called beer, whiskey, and other mind altering beverages) for their own good and the well being of their family's! All this is just my opinion, I do agree that all people must obey the laws! All people, including the Gentelman who just recieved 8 years for running a Meth lab in a home were a elderly women and a 6 year old child was living, a $10.000 fine plus court costs and a SCOLDING! Not to mention the girlfriend (who is pregnet) getting supervised probation for followed by 3 years of regular probation and a $250.00 fine plus court costs! Whats with that? I really must have missed something there?? Also someone said in a posting that wait till we see who buys the home of the Browns and something about a treasure in the yard? WOW where do you hear these things? If this is true maybe you should tell the police were you are hearing these things at, That sounds very important and possibly dangerous? I really must be shelterd LOL, I never hear things like that i think i should start paying better attention and reading the news better..Has any one heard about the kids that were in the home? The news made that sound like such a surpise, if they were being watched like it said they didn't know there were kids in the home? If it was known that there were kids there during all this then wouldn't that be child abuse it self if the child services left them in there during the investigation? That does not make sence either, in my opinion the Browns were not the only ones endangering those kids. I do hope the browns learn from their mistakes and others learn too.

What a bunch of BULL CRAP O- LA.
Carlos Brown and his wife partner bought houses, cars, and plenty of cash, with assets from their drug dealing operation, for many years.
Lets not try to make him some poor victim of drug abuse.
HE WAS A MAJOR DEALER IN PORTAGE COUNTY FOR YEARS!!
One or two drug task forces were after him for years and he finally got caught by the best task force around..PORTAGE COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE,
Under the fine leadership of Sheriff Kaley..

The guy even said his habit was costing $3,600 a month, so why didn't the state take everything from them. All she needs to do is stay healthy and in 5 years she'll be out living large on dirty money.
I like how he tried to own it by saying he was addicted and he made her do this. She wasn't taking drugs so what was her excuse for traveling down this path? Most likely greed of the almighty dollar.
Boy his apology sounded scripted right out of Law l0l. The plea agreement was already signed on on the table from the prosecutor back in October. He was just trying to get the judge to reduce it. They walked in to the courtroom already knowing that his fate was l0 and hers was 5 and maybe with a great performance they could get less.
I'd for one like to know the date of his supposed car accident then have a forensic accountant back into the finances, and strip every bit of their dirty money from them. Anyone who lives around here knows the man has been dealing for many many many years. Prior to oxi becoming a popular drug of choice it was always the other in drugs that he made available to anyone with money or stolen goods to barter. She kept quiet so she could live high on the hog with the dirty cashola, well now they pay the ultimate price. As I stated previously when does the IRS come in to investigate?

Blah, Blah, Blah, sounds like the apology they gave the court was mainly self pity or excuses for getting caught, what about all the other lives they have helped destroyed. Just like someone else said, drug money can buy your way out of anything, especially in Ravenna, Ohio. This case had so many twist and turns, why wasn't receiving stolen property added to the list, and read yesterdays post!
