Kent State University men's basketball standout Chris Singletary has been suspended indefinitely from the team after being arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated early Saturday.

Singletary was stopped at the corner of East Main Street and Overlook Drive at 2:43 a.m. for weaving in traffic, according to the Kent Police Department. Officers said Singletary's speech was "slow and slurred."

According to the report, he failed the field sobriety test and was taken to police department. His blood alcohol content registered 0.134, nearly twice the legal limit.

The 19-year-old was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and released later that morning.

The sophomore small forward, spent Sunday afternoon in street clothes, watching KSU's 67-58 win over Western Michigan from the end of the Golden Flashes' bench.

According to several sources close to the KSU program, Singletary has had trouble dealing with a series of recent personal problems and tragedies. He asked for forgiveness in a statement released just before Sunday's game.

"I want to apologize to my family, my teammates, the fans and to the administration at Kent State for my actions over the weekend," Singletary said in a statement. "I let all of you -- and myself -- down. There is a lot going on in my personal life, which I let affect my judgment in a negative manner and I am truly sorry that my actions have cast a negative light on the program. I would also ask for your understanding as I deal with these very difficult issues off the court."

While Singletary has been suspended indefinitely, Singletary may only miss one game. The athletic department handbook calls for a suspension for all players charged with a misdemeanor. The fact that this is Singletary's third suspension in a little more than a year and a half in Kent may affect the punishment.

The school or the athletic department could also require Singletary to seek counseling.

"We fully support Chris as he goes through this difficult time and we look forward to him rejoining the team in the near future," said KSU Athletic Director Laing Kennedy.

Singletary is averaging 9.4 points per game this season, but he has played like a potential all-league selection since the start of the Mid-American Conference season, averaging 13 points and shooting 74-percent from the field in five MAC games.

"Right now, I want to do what is best for Chris," said KSU coach Jim Christian. "It is more important than basketball. We want to help him as best we can and worry about basketball later."

Kent State University's men's basketball team currently is leading the Mid-Amercian Conference East Division.

I wasn't forgiving when the judges sons were in trouble? I think you need to either go back and re-read. I was all for the police officer Bennet making the decision that he did. In that article I said many times I didn't believe it was as serious as the chief of police was screaming about. I do recall saying that smashing pumpkins didn't amount to the charge they were trying to level and I said what is the difference between kicking a door and knocking hard on one?

As far as this, I remember being l9 & 20. I also remember not being perfect, I've also learned from many mistakes I've learned along the way.

As a parent my children have made mistakes and bad decisions and I hope that they have taken something from each and every one of those events to make them a better person in the future.

I remember about l5 years ago a young man from Ravenna who was attending Kent State was drinking, went left of center and killed some individuals on St Rt l4 when the car flipped over the bridge and into the water. That young man served at least l0 years or more in jail for his actions, which I supported. If youth is going to make a mistake they should own it, pay their penance and than move forward. I say follow the letter of the law as it applies and follow the rules and guidelines that Kent State has for this type of behavior. I just don't think someone at this young age should be condemned for a lifetime.
I don't think young kids should be drinking it's against the law but I also don't think one or two mistakes should be held above a persons head to crucify them to no end. He will suffer his punishment, hopefully he will have learned from it.

INABP - I think I am begining to understand that you are not in favor of giving second chances.

Correct? I recall several bb players over the years @ crackron given second chances. Players caught with weed, breaking into cars while enrolled at OSU, one player attended a "prep" (should read jail) high school before attending your school. I can go on if you like. Please also try to remember Hug coached at crackron before he went to CU.

Your current head coach has been given a huge second chance. Right? Do you recall what happened at his last MAC school coaching job?

Ohio gal was not very forgiving when the Portage County judge's son was arrested for breaking and entering even though he was not charged with assult or rape. Oh I guess he was not a sports star.

Ohio gal we would not have enough busess if we threw every college kid who go a DUI under the bus. I did not make any assumptions. Three suspensions, ejection from ball game at OU, and a DUI charge of nearly twice the legal limit are all facts. The Coach has reminded tbe players many time not to drink and drive. Chris got more warnings for drinking and driving than he got from the ref when he was ejected fron tbe OU game. Oh gee, the ref did not say "I forgive you. You can come back and play and not have to suffer the embarassment of sitting on the bench for bad behavior." He was out of the game for good. Even that behavior did not deter him from the drunk driving charge the very next week.

A 19 year old should understand that. I hope that we do not have to wait until 30 years of age before these sport stars mature. Bobby Huggins was over 30 when he was picked up for being stinking drunk. Many around him knowingly let him drink and drirve. He was the Coach of a major university. He left CU and is now at WVU. So all is not lost when you pay your debt to society. Although your insurance rates will be higher, you may even be allowed to drive the bus.

By the way many drunk drivers get to drive to school and work but can not go to the bars to get drunk again.

If we think it ok to let 19 year old students drink and drive, lets just change the laws and say as long as you are under 30 and immature you can drive while drunk. The little darlings will get a gentle slap on the wrist.

I am not a bad person.

A young man made a bad decision, drinking too much to cope with the loss of a friend. Not the end of the world.

Check the police blotter- Chris wasn't the only teen that drank underage this weekend. He made a mistake, as kids will do. All of this negative publicity, in addition to court and lawyer costs and the loss of his license, and Chris will have learned his lesson.

I just don't like to throw people under the bus until the whole story comes out. I myself as I'm sure many of us have not been thrilled at different times of our lives when people make assumptions. Yes it appears evident that well he was driving and blew twice the limit, but we can't expect them at the college level to be totally mature. Aren't we all allowed some mulligans in life? These events could turn out to be the reason they change their life around. Maybe this kid will never be involved in a DUI traffic fatality because of what happened last weekend. It could be a turning point and we have to have hope that a lesson was learned. You know the whole benefit of the doubt thing. Hoping he learns, grows matures. I hold a 30 year old more responsible than a l9 year old. Although both are over the legal age per se.

Some people just do not get it. I am surprised that Ohio gal did not get it.

I am talking about good citizenship behavior free of criminal activity on the part of sports figures who too often are give star or hero status based on their sports ability.

Thomas and Singletary have only been charged. They have not been found guilty by me or any court in the land. AS FAR AS I KNOW THEY ARE NOT GUILTY. THE COURT SYSTEM WILL GIVE US MORE DETAILS AND THE ANSWER AS TO THEIR GUILT AND PUNISHMENT. IF THEY ARE FOUND GUILTY I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEIR SHIRTS HANGING IN THE RAFTERS OF THE UNIVERISTY OR SEE THEM REPRESENTING THE UNIVERSITY ON THE BASKETBALL COURT.

AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED ITS OVER. THEY SHOULD ACCEPT THE SHAME THEY BROUGHT TO A GOOD UNIVERSITY. IF FOUND GUILTY AND LOSE ANY STAR OR HERO STATUS.

I do want to hear "OH GEE WIZ they are just some little boys that have not grown up"

They are men who should know right from wrong and accept the consequences for their bad behaviorIF THEY DO NOT.

I do not want Drunk Drivers, Rapists, or Men who break into my home living in my community until they pay their complete debt to society.

I do not want my daughter raped or killed by a drunk driver.

If either is found guilty, Lainge Kennedy will have a very easy decision. He knows what to do. He will not have to consult with President Loften on this matter.

The good reputation of the university is far more important that wining a few basketball games.

Chris can always transfer to another college. Bobby Huggin would take him in West Virgina. They might even share a beer together and discuss what it it like being a drunk.

All future KSU sports figures will know that if they come to Kent State Unveristy they will behave or be gone. This will send a powerful message to anyone young man or woman who wants to wear the Kent State University Jersey.

Did I make myself clear?

What does Maurice Clarrett have to do with this? I don't recall the guy having a bottle of booze and a gun in his car. We are talking about youth who have a lot of adoration and their maturity level has yet to catch up. I thought a first DUI was a misdemeanor. The coach from Ravenna hasn't been found guilty yet, has he?

inabp - Let's recap some of your post in the last 7 days when discussing KSU BB.

***Posted by I'm Not a Bad Person January 24, 2008 KenBiz8 be carefull who you call ignorant.

Look at the 20 wins SEASONS and you will see more cup cakes and Twinkies than you will find in the Acme Bakery. The NCAA selection team will recogize that in March.

The only way KSU will go to the dance if they win the MAC tournament. Do you know why KSU did not schedule Sisters of Mercy? They don't have a basketball team. A "W" is not a W. A win over NC Stake would shut me up real quick.

Remember the 3 cookie wins by OSU football..YSU, AU and of course the power house football team KENT STATE UNIVERISTY. I LOVE THE OSU FOOTBALL PROGRAM BUT THEY WERE LUCKY AND OVERRATED. The last two championship games proved that.

Christian and Kennedy can beat on their chest like a baboon and waste KSU money on newspaper/radio ads touting the 20 wins and that does nothing. Most people don't fall for the 20 win seasons.

All the money spent on football might just as well have been flushed down the toilet.

Sorry that I have to tell YOU like it is. As Bill Clinton said: IT IS WHAT IT IS.

SOMEDAY YOU MIGHT JUST GET IT.

Let's just wait and see what the NCAA says about KSU player behavior on the court. Where is the MAC Commissioner? Even Kennedy was waving his hands acting like a wild man trying to get control over the KSU-Akron game.

Here is what I think. Christian is doing everything he can do this season to get his ticket punched to go out of the MAC. To do that he needs quality wins over quality teams.

Here are some quotes from the Akron Beacon Journal.

"Worse news (for Kent State): Eric Thomas, a member of the Elite Eight team, was arrested for rape. He is currently a basketball coach at Ravenna High School. He allegedly broke into some dude's house, assaulted him and raped the woman. As a result, KSU took down Thomas' retired jersey banner. "

Kent State is unveiling a live eagle as a mascot tonight. There's your theme for the game: Rapes and eagles.

"Kent State's students were really obnoxious during the national anthem. The singer missed at least three notes by my count, too.

"During player introductions, the video board showed each Flashes' "previous affiliation" instead of "high school." I suppose that's a side effect of having a team comprised mainly of mercenaries " err " transfers."

Chris Singletary is playing, despite getting tossed from the loss at Ohio.

KSU is holding the most annoying halftime contest ever. Two fans are taking turns at giving commentary of a Kent State highlight clip. It's a bunch of unintelligible yelling.

Jeremiah Wood leads the Zips with 11 points, including two foul shots off a flagarant foul. It was pretty ugly " the foul, not the shots.

A quarter flew out of nowhere to land behind Brett McKnight on the Zips bench midway through the second half. It came from the direction of Kent State's student section. A lot of Kent State's students look like the turbo-loser in the viral video My New Haircut. (Only click that link if you have tough skin and a sense of humor.)

Linhart got a little chippy with Mike Scott. Linhart went down hard on offense. He might have retaliated on defense (I didn't see it). Then Scott got in his face. Linhart pushed Scott's face away.

A mini-brawl broke out when McNees fouled Haminn Quaintance a little too hastily. Both parties got a technical foul. So did Quade Milum.

That's when Kent State's fans showed their true class by tossing garbage at the Akron players. After the incident, the stadium chanted, "We are Kent State." Next time you do something disgraceful, stand over your victim and shout your name. It makes it set in better

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. THE AKRON VIEW IS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THE RECORD COURIER VIEW. IN THE FUTURE, TELL IT LIKE IT IS, EVEN IF IT HURTS.

IF THE NCAA DOES NOT STEP IN EXPECT MORE OF THIS EMBARASSING BEHAVIOR FOR THE KSU TRANSFER PLAYERS.
I EXPECT NOTHING LESS....UNLESS CHRISTIAN AND KENNEDY TAKE A LEADERSHIP ROLE AND START EARNING THEIR HIGH SALARIES FOR A MID MAJOR ATHLETIC PROGRAM.

I really don't think you have the best intentions of KSU or any KSU Student BB player in mind. You really should post your trash on www.zipsnation.org IMHO

I am for honesty and good behavior for Arkon U, Ohio State, and of course my beloved Kent State University students.

I am the voice or morailty to keep the KSU administration on the correct road and not be corrupted by Sports Wins or short terms success at the cost of behavior that is not acceptable.

I never got drunk at 19 and it was legal for me to buy beer at that time. Let me be the first to hope that you never are hurt by a drunk driver.

Somehow I thought you had to be 21 to drink in Ohio. This is not spitting on the sidewalk or smoking in a cafe. IT IS A CHARGE OF DRUNK DRIVING. YOU DON'T SEEM TO GET IT. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO BE KILLED BEFORE PEOPLE STOP DRINKING AND DRIVING. He would be a good poster child for someone who chose to drink and drive. This could wake him up and help him to be a better person in the future rather than keep askig for forgiveness.

If he is not mature at 19 when will he become responsible? Maybe he should talk to Maurice Clarett in jail if he has not learned a lesson.

I am sorry to learn that he has personal problems and uses drinking as a way to cope. What is next?
Drugs?

After three suspensions I do not believe he has not learned his lesson. Kent should cut its losses with such a slow learner.

If I hear of similar behavior on the part of Akron U athletics, I hope they also take the proper action and throw the players off the bus and not under the bus. Did you see Bobby Huggis make a "silly ass" of himself and made the national highlights?

These kids come to the university where they are expected to learn. A very important part of learning is that they must face the consequences for serious misdeeds. Once they learn that their life will be much better. Too many athletics are treated different and learn to act like OJ. They begin to believe that they are way above the law.

I am certain that Coach Christian and Lainge Kennedy will do the right thing. Let his sit out for the rest of the year. This will help him to learn that he must fact the consequeces for his actions.
