Staff report
In the Golden Flashes' home opener on Tuesday afternoon, the team extended its winning streak to four games with a 16-4 victory over Malone at Schoonover Stadium.
Newcomer Brett Weibley, a freshman, led the offensive attack by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, four runs and two RBIs.
In total, Kent State had five round-trippers, with junior Greg Rohan drilling his fifth home run of the season.
Rohan went 3-for-4 on the day.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Smith threw the first three innings of the game and improved to 3-1 on the season.
Malone scored first, but it would be the Pioneers' only lead of the day.
The Pioneers grabbed an early 1-0 lead after they put runners on the corners with two outs and Scott McIlvain stole home.
Kent State took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
Weibley doubled with one out and freshman John Lydic reached on an error.
Then, the Golden Flashes took the lead with RBI singles from Jared Humphreys and Doug Sanders.
The Pioneers would tie the ballgame in the top of the third, but the Golden Flashes answered with seven runs in the bottom of the same inning.
Rohan would lead off the inning with a home run to center. After the next two men reached, Weibley smashed a two-RBI double to center field. After a groundout, Humphreys smashed a two-run home run to left field.
That offensive explosion forced Malone to switch pitchers, but the Flashes had already found their groove.
After Sanders singled, sophomore Anthony Gallas homered to left field,KSU's third time going yard in the inning, and by the end of the third the Flashes had gained a 9-2 lead.
Kent State scored one run in each of the next four innings before adding three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final 12-run advantage.
With one out and runners at first and second, senior Ryan Tokarz tallied a pinch-hit RBI single. After a walk and a flyout, sophomore Conor Egan doubled to deep left-center, scoring two runs to put the Golden Flashes ahead 16-4.
The KSU bullpen threw the final six innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
Junior Steve Ross threw three innings of relief for Smith, allowing one run and four hits and three innings.
Left-hander Kyle Hallock threw the seventh and eighth, giving up one run and two hits.
Freshman left-hander Cory Martin threw a scoreless ninth, allowing only one hit.
