ROOTSTOWN -- A 17-year-old boy is in custody after he allegedly robbed the Dollar General store Thursday. The store is located at 4236 S.R. 44, south of Interstate 76.

Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley said an employee of the store had called to report the youth who was armed with a handgun.

The teen, who was not from the county, forcibly robbed one of the cashiers of an undetermined amount of money, Kaley said. The boy then fled the store on foot and then entered a car, which then left the area. Kaley refused to comment whether there were other people in the car.

The car left the area, but the driver stopped at local church so evidence may be disposed, Kaley said, also refusing to name the church or the evidence left at the scene.

Police were able to stop the vehicle at Lynn Road, and the teen was arrested, Kaley said. He will be charged with delinquency by reason of aggravated robbery and delinquency by reason of fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. The county prosecutor may add additional charges, Kaley said.

Members of the sheriff's department, Ohio Highway Patrol and Ravenna Police Department participated in the apprehension of the suspect.

I am glad he was caught! To bad social services and laws make it so hard for decent parents to punish there chilren when there young. These days kids are taught in school that parents are not aloud to give them a good old fashioned belt on the butt. Sad part is when they do something like this whatever the law inforecement wants to do is aloud, but they are the first to tell us as parents how to raise out kids.

I was in front of this store when the Officer responded.

They did a great job. Is this one of the many robbers that hit Brimfield and have now moved on down I 76?

I agree, this scumbag should be tried as an adult with gun specifications. More and more, I am leaning toward the old days that you try them and then you hang them. That would sure take some of the swagger out of them. I think we should show his face all over the county as well as his family. Social disapproval is the greatest deterrent. Maybe that would make a few more parents start acting like parents instead of letting their kids run wild.

I will bet he is from Akron. He most likely thinks that he is too smart to get caught by a bunch of little town Barny Fifes. Well he learned a good lesson didn't he.

Put this kid away as an Adult. Send a message that Portage County will not be soft on crime no matter what.

Great job goes out to Local Law Enforcement.

What happened to the good ole days when you could rob a place and get away? What's this world coming to?

Too bad he has to be tried - would have been nice just to "take him out" since he had a gun!

Let's hope they do try him as an adult!

Wow..Great Job actually catching a robbery suspect so fast.
It is very hard to arrest the bad guy, especially when the bad guys have such quick access to the interstate highways in Southern Portage County. They usually hit the road and are gone.

However this went down, the Cops deserve all the praise they can get.
EXCELLENT work fellas.

I hope Victor Viglucci prosecutes this dangerous kid as an Adult. Any 17yr old using a gun during a crime needs to go away a long time.
