A three-car crash on S.R. 14 killed an Industry Road resident, injured the two other drivers, sending one into the West Branch reservoir, and closed the road for the better part of the day Thursday.
The accident occurred at about 7:27 a.m., about two miles southeast of Ravenna where the corners of Charlestown, Edinburg, Ravenna Township and Rootstown meet.
A semi carrying dry concrete powder was eastbound when a car driven by Mary L. French, 78, of Edinburg, failed to yield at a stop sign at Industry Road and S.R. 14 and pulled out in front of the truck, according to the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Truck driver Walter Jones, 44, of Cleveland, swerved and attempted to stop his truck, which was carrying 25,000 pounds of dry cement powder, and collided with French's vehicle.
French most likely was killed on impact, according to Ravenna Township Fire Chief Steve Bosso.
The collision almost sent the truck and the wreckage of French's Ford into the Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir at West Branch State Park. Meanwhile, a north-bound Jeep Cherokee driven by Peggy Griffith, 53, of Deerfield, swerved to avoid the crash and ended up in the reservoir.
Randy Harper of Bath was driving in a second cement truck behind Jones when he saw the wreck ahead of him. A retired police officer, Harper said he and Jones were eastbound on S.R. 14 toward Interstate 76 when he saw the first truck "go left, then go right" and then saw a "cloud of dust."
Harper said he didn't know what had happened until he turned onto Industry Road, stopped his truck, got out and "heard the lady (Griffith) screaming."
"She was screaming for help," he said.
Harper said he climbed over the guardrail and saw Griffith in her sinking car. He had taken off his jacket and was prepared to dive in, but was able to help pull her out of the water. He said she had a minor head injury and a broken leg.
Bosso said the Edinburg Fire Department transported Griffith to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. A Ravenna City Fire Department ambulance took Jones there as well. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Bosso said his department originally received a request for the Portage County Water Rescue Team and was on the scene by 8 a.m.
"When we got the call for the dive team, it was "car in the water, person out of the car,'" Bosso said. "I pulled up and thought "Wow, this is a lot different than I thought it was.'"
Jones' truck was "right on top of the Ravenna Township sign," Bosso said, but the area is near the border of four townships. He said he and Edinburg Fire Chief Tim Paulus took command of the scene, which crews were still working into the afternoon as wreckers cleaned up debris.
A large crane from Falls and Stebbins Automotive in Mantua was used to lift the nearly unrecognizable remains of the wrecked car onto a flatbed trailer. Floating booms were placed in the reservoir by hazmat crews to contain any spilled oil from the vehicles.
A total of about 50 personnel from local and county agencies eventually responded to the crash, Bosso said. Other fire departments responding with personnel or vehicles included Kent, Palmyra, Ravenna city, Ravenna Township, Rootstown and Streetsboro.
The northbound lane of S.R. 14 was closed until dark Thursday and will be closed again today for crews to excavate contaminated soil, according to The Ohio Department of Transportation. The one open lane of traffic will be maintained by flaggers.
ODOT advised motorists to detour onto S.R. 44 to the S.R. 5/44 bypass to I-76 to avoid the incident scene.
The Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating.

whiteninjatiger, thanks for the disjointed, nonsensical, insane rambling which has ensured that all of us are now dumber for having read it!
We can only hope that you take your own advice to "set an example for the younger generation", and learn to communicate effectively in the English language.
We should all thank a Vet for "the freedom of all of our ignorance?"
You Sir, should be subject to legislation which would make it illegal for you to reproduce. PERIOD.

No one told me the Jerry Springer show was in town, What is wrong with all you ! not just the ones laying blame on the old woman but the ones saying the crap about the people laying the blame, you all need to do something better with your life for real. The fact is( Mrs. French pulled out in front of a tanker truck). Period. okay! So therefore it was her fault. Period. Did she die because of what she did yes. Period. So everyone just give your sympathy's be done with it. Your all supposed to be setting the examples to the younger generation, look what they all get to look forward to. There are about a million and one debates that could go with this story, the simple fact is that everyone knows the who's, what and where. The biggest problem isn't who uses the cell phone or putting make up on in there car or reading a newspaper etc. the problem is your all supposed to be licensed drivers in the state of ohio who passed a drivers test that says your qualified to drive, well, drive and stay focused. There's the moral to the story if you follow it, could save your life or others. When your all done griping about that, when you see a Vet thank him for the Freedom of all of your Ignorance!

Boy, people are quick to judge and give an opinion, aren't they? My deepest sympathy to this wonderful family that lost a very dear person. I live on Industry Rd., and my life whizzes past me each and every day when I pull out on SR 14 from Industry, or have to turn onto it while coming home from work. There are several near accidents there on a daily basis. It is a terrible place to pull out of or turn into because of where the road is situated. Accidents can and do happen in a split second and can happen to anyone, so lets not judge someone by their age.

I also apologize to anybody that my comment may have offended. That was not my intent.
I was just simply responding to a previous post on the boards. My suggestion was that everyone should be re-tested. We are all human after all.
Again, no harm intended, and God Bless.

I too will apologize. Although this isn't a memory book, memorial site or an obituary posting it's a news article with an unfortunate ending.
I don't think any of us would have posted these comments to something honoring her life.
These kind of tragic accidents happen to all, teens, people on phones, women applying make, the elderly and just plain mistakes. I don't think any of the posters were attacking this women personally I know my intent was not to, it was just easy to discuss the additional topic of elderly drivers.
To her family I'm sure she will be dearly missed and I'm truly sorry for your loss. She will live in your hearts forever. Bless you all.

I apologize to the family of Ms. French. I don't think anyone was trying to hurt the family on purpose through this forum.
I hope that your family is able to celebrate her life in such a horrible time and circumstance. From what has been said about Ms. French, she sounded like a wonderful woman.
Again, I apologize.

Well congratulations to all of those who have decided to post their ever-bright opinions on driver safety. Do you leave the mind-numbingly narrow-minded notations on message boards regarding accidents caused by drunk driving, young drivers preoccupied with the radio and friends, accidents caused by women applying make-up while driving, people of all ages who find it a wonderful idea to drive while on a cell phone? Or do you just discriminate against the elderly? Rather than leave a heart-felt sentiment or a warm memory of this truly remarkable woman, you have decided to make this a forum to display your ingnorant, short-sighted point of view. Nothing short of typical for the world we now know. Mary French was one of the most thoughtful, kindhearted and generous individuals I've ever known. This is a very tragic accident, and no less of an accident than one caused by any driver. Thankfully no other lives were lost. If you would like to spew nonsense about how you are the safe drivers advocate, please find an appropriate message board. My grandmother will be greatly missed. I appreciate the sincere condolences.
