One for the Books: Picture Books for Young Children

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

I have found a nice selection of picture books for really young children.

"What's Inside Your Tummy, Mommy?" by author and illustrator Abby Cocovini is an interactive picture book for parents to share with their young children when a brother or sister is on the way. Without information overload, little children can follow along on the growth of the baby with a picture of a life-size fetus that can actually be folded across Mom's growing tummy, showing how the baby fits in and how big it is each month. Henry Holt and Co. Ages 2 to 8.

Sylvan Dell Publishing has several new books out, and each comes with an educational games and activities section at the back.

"Animals Are Sleeping" by Suzanne Slade, illustrated by Gary R. Phillips, offers brightly colored illustrations of different animals as they sleep, with very simple, soothing accompanying words, only a few to each page. The flamingo is shown sleeping "standing up," the sloth "upside down," birds "perched in a tree." Ages 2 to 6.

"Sort It Out!" by Barbara Mariconda is told in rhyme and has simple, friendly, colorful illustrations by Sherry Rogers. Packy the Packrat is told to put away his things by sorting them into categories. But several things belong in more than one group: the turtle has a hard outer shell, but it also fits with the things that are green. Ages 4 to 8.

"The Best Nest" by Doris L. Mueller has very pretty, detailed illustrations by Sherry Neidigh that show off the unique qualities of nature's critters. The birds ask clever Magpie how to build a good nest. As she describes each stage of construction, the others think they've heard enough and go off one by one to build their own nest, without learning the rest of the instructions. That's why every bird builds its nest a different way. Ages 4 to 8. (Note: There is another book with this title that is one of my favorites, about a bird that isn't satisfied and searches for a better home, then realizes that she had the best nest all along. I recommend both.)

The last of the Sylvan Dell books is "Blackberry Banquet" by Terry Pierce, illustrated by Lisa Downey. The blackberries are ripening, and the animals in the forest come out to take a taste of them, including the "munching mouse," the very colorful "busy-busy" bluebird, squirrel, fox and deer. When a bear shows up, he scares the deer, who frightens the fox, who shocks the squirrel, etc. Ages 4 to 8. For online audio readings, more activities and matching stuffed animals, visit www.SylvanDellPublishing.com or call 877-958-2600, toll free.

"Duck Soup" by Jackie Urbanovic continues the adventures of "Duck at the Door." Max the duck is trying to create his soup "masterpiece," adding a little of this and a little of that. When he goes out to the garden for more fresh ingredients, his friends show up and, unable to find him, assume that he fell into the pot and became duck soup. So they pour the soup into the sink, through the strainer, to "save" him. HarperCollins. Ages 4 to 8.*

"Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany" is written by Jane O'Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. I love these colorful illustrations. Nancy finds "fancy" words to use in place of more common words -- for example, "joyous" instead of "happy" and "excursion" for "trip." This is probably a girl's book -- there's a lot of pink! HarperCollins. Ages 4 to 7.*

"Amelia Bedelia and the Cat" by Herman Parish has ink and watercolor pictures by Lynn Sweat. The popular Amelia finds a kitten and wants to take good care of it, so she asks around to find out how to be a good cat caretaker. But the cat is mischievous and the confused Amelia finally admits she has "a lot to learn about cats." Greenwillow Books. Ages 4 to 8.*

"Read All About It!" by first lady Laura Bush and her daughter, Jenna Bush, has bright, beautiful, lively illustrations by Denise Brunkus. Tyrone Brown is "a professional student and class clown" who can't be bothered with books. He and his best friends would rather do "real" things, such as solve math problems and do science experiments. But one day, as his teacher reads a book aloud, the characters come to life, from Benjamin Franklin to a fire-breathing dragon. When the teacher reads about a pig, it becomes very real to the students, but when she finishes the book and closes it, the pig disappears. Everyone is upset and goes looking for him, finally finding him -- and all the other characters -- waiting for them in the library. HarperCollins. Ages 4 to 8.

"The Incredible Book Eating Boy" by Oliver Jeffers is very clever. Henry loves books, but not to read; he eats them. He starts with a word, then a sentence, then a page, etc. As he keeps eating, he keeps getting smarter. Eventually he gives up eating the books and just reads them. But he has taken a giant bite out of the back corner of this book! The illustrations are very unusual, with a mixed-media approach, such as typewriting on graph paper, oil paints on lined paper, a dictionary page with painting over it. Philomel Books. Ages 4 to 8.

Everybody knows the story of Cinderella, but "Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal: A Worldwide Cinderella" tells it from many different cultures at once. Author Paul Fleischman and illustrator Julie Paschkis have woven together lines from the fairy tale versions told in Mexico, Korea, Iraq, Zimbabwe, India, Poland, Ireland and more, with illustrations to match each country's tale. What does she wear to the ball? In Indonesia, a crocodile brings her "a sarong made of gold," in China, "a cloak sewn of kingfisher feathers," and in Japan, "a kimono red as sunset." There's also a simple map for locating the countries. Henry Holt and Co. Ages 5 and up.

*Here's some more fun: Children can e-color a picture of Max the duck, help Fancy Nancy catch butterflies, unscramble words for Amelia Bedelia and more online at
