One for the Books: Not Just for the Guys

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

With Father's Day approaching, it's time to look at some books by and for the guys. But look out, fellas, because these are so good the ladies will want to borrow them.

"All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-Down House" is the true story of Akron resident and Beacon Journal writer David Giffels' attempt to restore an old house to its original beauty. When Giffels' wife finds out she's expecting Baby No. 2, they go hunting for a larger home and find a big, run-down old mansion in Akron. Giffels admits that he loves restoring and reconstruction projects, but this fixer-upper needs an awesome amount of work. He is driven by a challenge, a "wholly impractical, mostly secret yearning to find peace through chaos," and he has just enough knowledge to be dangerous. He gives us terrifying descriptions of the state of the house -- including smells so vivid that I needed some fresh air: "The ceiling drooped heavily and dripped with cobwebs and flaking paint and strange extensions that looked like stalactites made of dirt. The thick plaster on the walls was reduced to piles of horsehair-infused sand on the floor and the walls were stained and restained with rust streaks and calcified blotches where the leaky steam lines and water pipes had left their mark. The walls seemed poisonous. The whole basement smelled of something that had been soaked and dried and soaked and dried until its scent had texture in three dimensions: one old, one new, and one fermenting." Oh, dear Lord. There is so much wrong with the house, I'm amazed he didn't turn his back on it in the beginning: there's no running water; the roof, windows -- 733 panes of glass -- and drainpipes are compromised; the flooring and walls are warped and filled with holes; not to mention that raccoons and other critters have been or still are in residence.

But he's filled with an image of the house's former glory, and he's tantalized by the idea of "a life of butler's buttons and summer bedrooms" in a mansion a mile from Stan Hywet. As we live through the renovations with the nice, self-effacing guy and his gentle wife and son, we see how all the work affects their lives, and he says that "as much as I was trying to change this house, it was changing me more." This absolutely lovely book is an intimate, funny, heart-warming and heart-breaking memoir, with occasional commentary from Gina, the usually patient wife. This is so well written; it's a keeper.

If a mystery is to your liking, it's a happy day. Les Roberts has brought back popular Cleveland private investigator Milan Jacovich for his 14th adventure in "King of the Holly Hop." When Milan attends his 40-year class reunion, he finds a typical group of classmates: the beauty, the jock, the geek, the annoying organizer, the brooding Vietnam veteran, the guy who became a celebrity, and the class bully. When one classmate turns up dead, another becomes Suspect No. 1, and Milan is hired to investigate. He admits that the years have changed him: "I've become cynical and suspicious of everyone," he says, but "when you get to know me I'm really cuddly." He's no longer smoking, he's switched from coffee to tea per his doctor's advice, and he's eating whole wheat bread. Roberts is up to date with his local references -- he mentions Progressive Field and "The Q" -- and Milan wears a Kent State sweatshirt. This is a really fun read, with nicely building tension and interesting character relationships. It's a good, solid mystery.

For a bit of inspiration, check out "Wide Awake: The Future Is Waiting Within You" by Erwin Raphael McManus. The Christian-based motivational speaker writes about his own background as an example of how believing can make anything happen. "Dream big so you can live big," he says. He is a pastor, artist, humanitarian, entrepreneur, iconoclast and comedian, and he runs a mission in Los Angeles, where his nondenominational following includes people from a diversity of ethnic backgrounds. His eight-step guide to living a life beyond your wildest dreams is as follows: Dream, Discover, Adapt, Expect, Focus, Create, Enjoy and Invest. He devotes a chapter to each and adds another: "Imagine." The book comes out in July.

I have two good picks for country music fans. "The Adventures of Slim and Howdy" was written by country singers Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn with the help of Bill Fitzhugh. The idea for the characters began in the liner notes of the duo's CDs. Two good ole boys from the South drink, fight, sing, dodge trouble and save a beautiful damsel in distress. I was surprised how entertaining this book is, with a quiet kind of humor: "The thing Howdy liked about Slim was his easygoing confidence. He seemed like a no-nonsense kind of guy. Serious without being prickly. Accountable. Couldn't understand why he didn't wear a hat, but, as he knew, people were funny." It's a raucous adventure and comes packaged with a CD of an exclusive Brooks & Dunn song.

"A Guitar and a Pen: Stories by Country Music's Greatest Songwriters" was put together by John Bohlinger and Justin Stelter. The 26 stories are a mix of fiction and nonfiction penned by a variety of writers, from Charlie Daniels, Tom T. Hall, Kris Kristofferson and Bobby Braddock to Tia Sellers and Janis Ian. There's something for everyone, and the stories are really enjoyable.

Sports enthusiasts can meet a real pro in "A Champion's Mind: Lessons from a Life in Tennis" by Pete Sampras with Peter Bodo. Sampras talks about the events that helped shape who he is and how he made himself into one of the greatest tennis players of all time. "This book will tell you who I really am," he writes. He includes anecdotes about his decision to turn pro at the age of 17, his championships, meeting his wife, and his health problems.

Finally, here's one for all of us: "My Hero: Military Kids Write About Their Moms and Dads" edited by Allen Appel and Mike Rothmiller. Children ages 7 to 14 draw pictures and write about their hopes and fears, their pride in their military parents, and how it feels to be left behind as a mom or dad goes off to serve in a time of war. Some are funny; some will touch your heart: "He is in Iraq. As bullets fly by him and bombs explode, my dad still writes to my family, telling us to keep our chins high."

According to Cindy Adams in the New York Post, Barack Obama is about to be swift-boated by the far right. For "swift-boated," of course, read "made the target of an organized mass of lies and exaggerations. In other words, a rerun of what the GOP did to John Kerry.
