Three people became trapped inside their vehicle after a two-vehicle crash Sunday at the intersection of Sandy Lake Road and Prospect Street in Rootstown.

A Kia sport utility vehicle involved in the incident rolled onto its side leaving the occupants temporarily trapped inside the vehicle.

The vehicle's occupants included Rootstown residents Tina Flinn, her daughter, Nicole, and her niece, Pamela Wells.

The crash, which occurred around 6 p.m., sent both drivers and two passengers to area hospitals for injuries from the crash.

The other driver involved in the crash needed assistance getting out of the vehicle and also was transported to an area hospital for crash-related injuries. The car's airbags were deployed.

Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley said deputies from his department also assisted along with troopers from the Ohio Highway Patrol. He said none of the injuries were life threatening.

The Rootstown Fire Department assisted the injured.

I do know if this had anything to do with this accident or not, but the driveways of that restaurant are too close to the intersection. I go by there every day, and when there are no cars in the parking lot, there is no problems. However, when they are busy, you have cars pulling out in front of you on Prospect ST and the Sandy Lake road. You have to watch these car coming out, so you take your eyes off of the light for a split second. That is all it takes. The light changes and the other cars proceed. The result is a collision.

I do not know if the proper people looked into the law requiring a certain distance for driveways to a commercial business from an intersection. If they did and these are legal, then the law needs to be changed.
With people turning in and coming out, there is not enough room to avoid those turning and to watch the light. I have seen people come out of the parking lot and run right through the red light. This is a unsafe situation.
