Grace (Shively) Ehresman of Ravenna recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

She was born in Edinburg on July 3, 1918, to Blanche and Orrie Shively. The family moved to Windham when she was 3 years old, and she attended Windham Schools and graduated from Windham High School. After graduating from Kent State University, she taught second and third grade for three years in Windham.

On June 28, 1943, Grace married Robert "Bob" Ehresman, who died in 1996. They had two children, Ron and Jeanne. To help out with college expenses for them, she went back to teaching and had to take one more year at KSU. She then taught for another eight years in third grade, again in Windham.

On June 22, Jeanne organized a surprise birthday party for her mother after the morning service at the Congregational Church in Windham. Grace's son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Donna, came from Olmsted Township; their daughter Pam, husband Bob and sons Isaac and Sam came from Plymouth, Mich.; and their son Mark, wife Kim, daughter Alice and son Ben came from Dublin, Ohio.

After the church services, cake and punch were served. Then the family went to Cal's Restaurant in Garrettsville, where they were treated to lunch by Ron and Donna. The Rev. Doug Snyder and Mary Ellen Ensinger also joined them for the celebration there.

On Grace's actual birthday on July 3, Ron, Donna and Jeanne took her to the Welshfield Inn in Burton.

Then on July 6, Grace had another celebration with her nieces and nephews at the Ravenna home of her nephew Chuck Porter. In attendance were John and Bev Porter of Garrettsville, Gladys Weis and friend Harold Taylor of Kensington, Wanda and Frank Vasarhely of Parma, Dick and Marilyn Porter of Macedonia, Chuck Porter of Ravenna, Ruth Marlewski of Parma, and Barb Biltz of Freedom. They all are children of her sister, Ethel Porter, who died in 2003. Grace's niece Linda Hrobak and nephews Jim and Harold Porter were not able to attend.

She enjoys seeing and hearing from many of the students she taught over the years.

She also keeps in touch with many friends and family, sending cards and letters and the church news to those who are unable to attend church. She also enjoys gardening and has a "green thumb" with the many plants inside and outside her home in Ravenna.
