NELSON -- Residents on Brosius Road are speaking up about something they say really stinks.

A new local company recently started providing cost-effective and environmentally conscious solutions for the off-site disposal of beverage waste.

U.S. Liquids Inc., located along S.R. 88, is a food and drink processing plant and storage facility. The plant is located at the old Bil-Mar turkey farm located on a 15-acre parcel in the township.

Owner Mark Fuerst runs the facility that processes liquids including soda, syrup, juice, beer, wine and similar sugar-based products. These products are accepted directly at the plant.

Calls placed to U.S. Liquids were not returned Tuesday.

This waste, according to Township Trustee Jim Turos, is what has residents turning up their noses.

The odor coming from the plant is offensive and a nuisance, said resident Betty Whitacre, who has lived in Nelson since 1992.

"It's a very rural and quiet place to live," she said.

Another issue is that the company removed a series of trees on the property which acted as a buffer for nearby residents.

"Now, there's no barrier," Whitacre said.

The Portage County Health Department said they have not received any formal complaints about the odor from residents.

Mike Settles, a media relations coordinator with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, said odors can be subjective.

"There are regulations for air quality control and odors can be declared a nuisance," he said. "These are handled on a case-by-case basis."

The Akron Regional Air Quality Management District also monitors levels of ambient air pollutants, enforces air pollution regulations and inspects major industrial air pollutant sources in Portage, Medina and Summit counties.

A representative said complaints can be taken over the phone by calling 330-375-2480.

Who cares? I don't want to read about this nor does 99% of the subscribers. I live 1/2 mile from the Ravenna Waste Water Treatment Plant and we never complain. Atleast this isn't vacant land just sitting there. As for Betty Whitacre, Turkey **** smells a lot worse.

I understand that it probably isn't the most pleasant thing in the world, but don't you think that the jobs are more important than the smell? I assume that he does have some employees. our economy is in the toilet of he is forced to close, that is just more jobs that is lost in Portage County, suck it up. I don't live too far from there and the smell never bothered me or my family.
