A nearly 2 1/2-hour standoff with area law enforcement ended with a Ravenna man charged with inducing a panic, a fifth-degree felony.
Shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Ravenna police received a call of a man threatening suicide at the Woodgate Apartments, located off of Freedom Street on Woodgate Boulevard.
The caller also reported that the man, identified as Aaron McHenry, 35, also was possibly in possession of several firearms.
According to a woman named Danielle, who did not want to give her last name, the man was in a third-floor apartment unit. The building was was temporarily evacuated until the situation was resolved. Residents of nearby Rushin Meadows also were evacuated.
"The man was trying to kill himself and told police he would kill them if they came inside," she said.
Minutes later the Metro Swat Unit, of which the Ravenna Police Department is a member, arrived and established a central command post in the parking lot of the new Ravenna Elks Lodge.
Officers surrounded the apartment building and gained entry to the residence around 6 p.m.
Ravenna Police Chief Randy McCoy said the man had barricaded himself inside the bathroom armed.
"We're negotiating with him and we're trying to establish a line of communication," he said. "We're trying to talk him out."
After an hour of negotiations, the suspect surrendered to tactical members without incident.
More than 20 members of the Metro Swat Unit responded with officers from the Portage County Sheriff's Office and Ravenna, Copley, Springfield, Norton, Brimfield and Richfield police departments.
The Ravenna Fire Department also responded and were on standby until the scene cleared.
Once inside, McCoy said they confiscated several weapons that were found inside the apartment, including two different caliber handguns and a rifle.
Woodgate Boulevard was temporarily closed during the standoff with police.
Several residents who were unaware of the situation watched the scene unfold from their porches or balconies.
"This is a nice place to live," Danielle said. "It's unfortunate this had to happen."
No injuries were reported.
"This was not a hostage situation," McCoy said. "He was alone and we were able to successfully negotiate with him to surrender."
McCoy said McHenry was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
As for the Metro Swat Team, McCoy said they are a well-trained group of professionals who work in coordination with one another.
"They do a good job," he said.
By 7 p.m., all evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes.

It is obvious that people are not going to agree on this subject. I don't think that mentally ill people should be put on a list or singled out, that is just silly. The families of these individuals need to take responsibility for their loved ones and try to get them the help they need before the situation gets out of control. I don't know the facts in this particular case, if he did have a gun in a bathroom and he did not come out when the police showed up originally, I for one don't think the authorities over reacted at all. The responding officers responsibility is to this man's neighbors to keep them safe as well as keeping Aaron safe. No one got hurt, it seems like the best end result possible. I am sorry he is in jail, but he has to bear some of the responsibility for his actions weather he called the Coleman center or not. People need to take responsibility for their own families and not rely on the rest of society to do it and then blame everyone else when things go bad. I wish you luck Kristen getting him the help he obviously needs.

Kristen I'm afraid I know the facts. Perhaps you can try and convince someone else but not me. And yes that is the normal procedure for someone having thoughts of suicide however when you barricade yourself in the bathroom with a gun and refuse to talk to the police when they arrive to transport you to the hospital it becomes a different procedure. Aaron is the one that escalated the situation and I'm afraid you know that, you're just looking to save face and for some one else to blame. So Kristen, Aaron may have done his part by calling coleman but he failed to do his part when he refused to accept the help being offered and then barricaded himself in the bathroom with a firearm. How about maybe a thank you for a peaceful ending to the situation. Nobody was hurt including Henry. You're just ****** because your embarrassed and now have legal issues that need to be handled. Would have been easier to just come out and get in the car and go to Robinson. And you know that that was the first option.

In regards to comment 13 no, you missed the point. Aaron did his part in calling the help line. The Ravenna cops had already blown it out of proportion before they even knew what was going on. Here, let me put it to you this way- I had someone tell me that when her ex had threatened suicide with a gun, a cop & an ambulance came and transported him to the hospital- that's the way it is supposed to be when you call for help. Also, they made him more suicidal! Wow what a great way to help. Hope you read my new article in the paper at least my voice has been heard & it sure isn't over!!!!!!!!!

God I hope I never get depressed and put on the "list" because if a cop stops me for going 5 miles over the speed limit, my name may pop up and show that I'm disturbed. You don't label people just because they have problems. The bulk of the people seeking help just need guidance while they're going through tuff times and want it to be a private matter because of people like Dowhatsright who wants to put their name out there for everyone to see.

Being from a familey with some mental illness I say that sometimes bad things happen. Not everyone that kills people have a mental illness. And if you had mental illness and did NOT kill anyone would you wan't your name posted up for everyone to judge you? I bet you wouldint.

Ok idiot, you have no clue obviously how many people are affected by mental illness. I work with these types of people on a daily basis and they can range from the from the least to the very severe. And where would you ever get that all people with mental problems would kill? I have been the one defending them as you want to ostricize them and mark them as being "disturbed", and make your "schindler's list" for the mentally handicapped. Perhaps we can make them wear a special color shirt or maybe even some type of symbol on their clothing. I can assure you every officer that arrived is familiar with Aaron and they knew of his "condition". And I don't vent anger at people with different "solutions", I vent anger at morons such as yourself.

Not all people with mental illness kill, or threaten to kill and mental illness is not an awful thing. However people like you make it so. If a list had been in effect, the police would have known of his condition, and perhaps even his doctor could have been contacted. Yes, a list is needed for the protection of the first responders and the mentally ill. People even carry tags telling they have heart problems, diabetics, and other major illness. Being identified with a mental illness is no worst, it helps in getting the proper response. But people with the idea that mental illness should be kept a secret is what is making it harder and harder for the public to understand. People like you that vent anger at someone that has a different solution to a problem that try to insult because they can not win with facts.

ok so Kristin you have completely missed the point. As I am not suprised. Birdman is speaking in a general form. This means he means as a whole. And I will say this, anytime someone barricades themselves in an apartment and makes threats of suicide and has the means to do(i.e. firearms) I believe that the situation was handled properly. If Aaron would have answered the door and come out of the apartment when the first officers would have arrived Metro would not have been activated. There are some other details that you did not mention, but the point is that u missed it. So Birdman you where absolutely on point.

Hello my name is Kristin. I AM THE WIFE of AARON WHO called for help and they totally blew it out of proportion!!!!!!!Isn't this exactly what the terrorists wanted to call a help line, which was a big step for Aaron to even do, and these wonderful law enforcement officers
ARE THE ONES WHO INDUCED THE PANIC! He had a counseling appt. for 6pm that eve. Then, a Ravenna cop called and badgered him! Because of the policies in place, as a result of the new terror laws THEY HAD ALREADY made this into something it wasn't. Sorry birdman you are reacting exactly how they hope all of us will. Keep funding the ones who escalated the situation . Exactly what they want. Oh just so you know, I am not a nut as a matter of fact I am totally relying on GOD
