The wife of a Ravenna man who is accused of inducing panic during a nearly three-hour standoff in Ravenna Tuesday says police blew her husband's call for help out of proportion.
Aaron McHenry appeared for arraignment via video from the Portage County jail on Wednesday.
Portage County Municipal Court Judge Barbara Watson set his bond at $25,000. The pre-trial was set for Aug. 22.
The standoff began when police received a call around 4 p.m. Tuesday about a man threatening suicide at the Woodgate Apartments, located off North Freedom Street on Woodgate Boulevard.
Just before 7 p.m., McHenry, 35, surrendered to members of law enforcement without incident.
His wife, Kristin McHenry, said Wednesday she isn't sure if jail is the right place for her husband to be, adding that he needs professional mental help.
"(Law enforcement officials) blew it out of proportion big time," she said. "I understand they have to do what they have to. I think they went about it all wrong."
Aaron McHenry called a mental health hotline, she said, and when they found out he had a gun, police showed up at their home.
"This is the first time he called for help, and this is what he got," she said. "He has been a little down in the dumps lately. We have been having some financial trouble."
More than 20 members of the Metro SWAT Unit responded with officers from the Portage County Sheriff's Office and Ravenna, Copley, Springfield, Norton, Brimfield and Richfield police departments.
Ravenna Police Chief Randall McCoy said that all the members of the negotiating team have received training with this type of situation, and this situation was handled correctly.
"If he had come out and talked with us, he probably would not have been arrested," he said. "We would have taken him to the hospital. He refused to talk with us, and there were weapons involved. That's when it becomes a tactical situation with the SWAT team."
McCoy said he was pleased the situation was resolved peacefully.
"I don't really know what set all this off," he said. "Obviously, there are issues, but fortunately he surrendered and we hope he'll get all the help he needs."
Kristin McHenry said she believes the SWAT team only escalated the situation, adding paranoia to her husband's state of mind.
"They are the ones who induced the panic, not him," she said. "He's had problems, but I knew he wouldn't kill himself, or hurt anybody else. It was a man who needed help, and when he called for it, they sent the SWAT team."

And to you're post number 74. Have I prevented you from posting you're opinion? NO. And I like correctve critisim when it is coming from a boss, educator, or someone "educated" to give it. I know this is a public post that is why I posted. And finally what do you do that makes you so much more "educated" than everyone else here? All I wanted when I Criticized you was if you think polic should have annual PT test do something about it or shut up. It's a great idea. Just like troopers, like you said.

Even if I was a "police officer" what would it matter. If I was a "police officer" do you think I would be talking to you or anyone about this. Especially on a public foum. UHHHH no! haha you really are stupid. But as for this forum I am using my " freedom of speech" as a citizen with no position as a "police officer".
And the run, I really don't care if you can run faster, your gonna have to stop eventually and I'll be right there my friend.

Oh Wise one, I can run it in 10.19.....and running is recreational for me. I'm a private citizen so I can't arrest..........You chose the profession, I didn't ask for your input so if your offended by my comments then so what.

I think that McCoy should look into your profile here and see if you are a "cop" and if so then you should be reprimanded for conduct unbecoming. You see, your a public official and your required to answer to the public. So, I think that your clearly stated opinions need to be brought to the attention of your supervisors and any potential court cases in which you are a "states witness." (Oh no....your not biased at all) Your real smart..... which had been my point from the whole start of this thing.

One day when you grow and hopefully become educated, you'll realize and respect the fact that our freedom and our society allows us to express our opinions.

You should probably find another line of work because you can't accept criticism directed at your "fellow brethren" nor do you have the capacity to realize that this is a public post and not a public competition because you can match wits with me.

oh and if you want to get "physical" I can run the OPOTA 1.5 mile run in 11:08. But hey it's only 1.5 miles. And the OPOTA run is not based on how fast you can catch a fugitive. It's based on the amount of energy you may use when detaining a person who is well... not cooperating.

Well I got off topic a little I guess. I am not here to argue who is in better shape. That is a whole other subject. The real question is did the ravenna police department and swat need to be involved and did they do a good job? Well it's very clear they showed up with alot of police that is how police work. Show up with more than you need just in case. And did they do there job, yes the guy came out of his apartment and did not kill himself. case closed!!
And I hate to do this but, how many times do you read in the newspaper fat cop out ran by pedophile?
