Catalyst Church in Kent is inviting young adults throughout the Kent and Akron areas to its Sunday services by giving away hundreds of free shot glasses. Inscribed with the words, "CatalystChurch.com: Give Us A Shot," the church aims to send a message that it accepts people where they're at. "Catalyst is committed to solid theology and progressively engaging culture," said the Rev. Jonathan Herron, lead pastor. "A few years ago I had the opportunity to study improv-comedy in Chicago under Tina Fey. I quickly realized that humor builds bridges. A church handing out shot glasses asking people to give them a shot? That's funny. And it's a creative invitation to our Sunday morning worship experience." The shot glasses are filled with candy, Herron said. "Church isn't about behavior modification; there isn't a list of do's and don't's that are posted at the front door for entry," he said. "What we discover from the Scriptures is that Jesus spent more time in bars and parties than he ever did in temples. Christ was concerned with building relationships -- meeting people where they're at -- before talking about God's plans for their future." Catalyst, which plans to open newly-renovated church offices this fall, is a non-denominational Christian church that meets at 10:30 a.m. Sundays at The Kent Stage in downtown Kent.
