As recently as last week, anyone interested in the progress of the Ravenna's new high school would have to drive to the North Chestnut Street location for a peek.
Now, with the help of a "construction cam," curious gawkers can simply visit the district's Web site, www.ravenna.portage.k12.oh.us for an up close look.
The camera, which came with a $4,000 price tag, allows viewing of live, up-to-the-minute updates about what's happening at the construction site.
Superintendent Tim Calfee gave a presentation to the board of education explaining how the camera works.
With a point and click, Web browsers will be able to see when the water lines are installed next week, or when the steel columns arrive in a month " or when the finishing touches are applied in spring 2010.
Not only does the construction cam give people the opportunity to constantly see what's happening, but the district will archive the progress in a photo timeline.
"We know that there's a lot of interest, enthusiasm and excitement about the construction of the high school," Calfee said. "It's very cool, and I think people will be interested in looking at the progress."
The camera is not set up for streaming video, but will update every 30 seconds. The person using the camera can pick what they want to look at in more detail.
Problems may arise, Calfee said, if too many people are trying to get a look at the same time.
Also, the new link on the Web site provides other news, photos of the floor and site plans of the new high school.
Board of Education member Joanne Newhauser said the construction cam is "amazing and very exciting."
"We're going about this project the right way," she said.
Board member Mike Tontimonia agreed.
"People can't go out there and wander around," he said. "This allows them to be there. It's really unbelievable."
