The building and land that once housed Havre Chevrolet and most recently Roger Chevrolet in Ravenna will be auctioned off Nov. 3 at a sheriff sale.
A large, red sign advertising the auction is planted in the overgrown tree lawn just a few feet away from where shiny, new Chevrolets once rolled off the lot.
Details of the sale of five parcels and the building at 1340 E. Main St., list the defendant as LKD Land Co. and the plaintiff as Fifth Third Bank. The building and property were appraised at more than $1.6 million, with the opening bid at $1.1 million.
The money gained from the auction will be used to pay back lenders, as well as Portage County, said Portage County Treasurer Stephen Shanafelt.
He said the county is owed $20,472 in back taxes.
According to the Portage County Auditor's Office, the business was located on five adjacent parcels that together total more than six acres. The property and building were purchased in Sept. 2006 for $1.65 million, although this figure did not include the value or the price of the Chevrolet dealership.
Roger Chevrolet closed in April after slumping sales amid a sluggish economy, turning off the lights on approximately 50 jobs.
At the time, no other dealerships were expected to move into the space, something referred to as "closing the point" in the auto industry.
Shanafelt said he is unsure if the building and property will sell at the auction, and was surprised they were going to auction so soon after closing.
"It was set up as an auto dealership and that industry is hurting right now like everyone else," he said. "We'll have to see if there are any bidders " it's a wait-and-see kind of thing. Hopefully, they'll be able to get it sold and get a profitable business in that location. That would be good for Ravenna."
The business brought in about $20,000 to the city of Ravenna in employee tax withholdings in 2007.
The property has been held in a limited liability company called LKD Land Co. LLC, according to records from the Ohio Secretary of State's Office.
Roger Cohen took over the dealership in September 2006 from Trey Havre, whose family operated the business for three generations " starting in 1927.
There has been a dealership at that location on East Main Street since 1967. But now, tall weeds growing in the cracks of the abandoned parking lot stand in place of new cars.
Other area businesses also have struggled with a slumping economy in recent years.
Polichena Motors, open for 36 years, closed in June 2007 because of the slow economy, only to re-open a week later as Haasz Auto Mall dealership.
After 25 years as a Ford Dealership, Charlie Cusack gave up his franchise rights at Cusack Ford in October, opting to convert his dealership, at 1350 E. Main St., into a used car lot.
The automotive national industry has taken giant hits recently, including General Motors Corp. reporting record losses this year. In February, the Detroit-based automaker reported a $38.7 billion loss for 2007 "a record for the auto industry."

I remember when that side of town was busy even Red Barn (wonder what ever happened to that chicken breading recipe?) was open way back when ...that was the local hang out before McDonald's came into town. More buildings are being closed up in town and for some reason people complain about no parking in Ravenna. Why would you want to park in Ravenna?? There is nothing here anymore!! Oh wait.. park in Ravenna and catch the Parta Bus to go to Kent...!!

I believe that Chrysler Dodge has again pulled their franchise from Rick. It has been over six months since he has had the chrysler dodge franchise, they just sold what they had there. Not a fact, just what I think. Seems to me if it where still a chrysler dealership they'd probably have some of them there. I remember a few years ago when Rick had almost 300 cars on that lot for sale. As of today he had eleven. The economy can be partly to blame but you cannot leave the entire blame on the economy as their are dealerships with effective management that are continuing to thrive.

It has been rumored for 2 years that it was sold. The manufacturer took back the KIA franchise so now they don't have it to sell so that leaves the CHRYSLER-DODGE franchises. Who is the supposed buyer this time I wonder?

At an opening bid of $1.1 million, I don't see anybody with their hand in the air, especially with no franchise in the building. The auto franchises that are gone from Ravenna the last 2 years ( FORD, PONTIAC, BUICK, GMC, CHEVY ) are gone for good, the manufacture did away with those locations, Oh and now the KIA franchise in town is gone even though the owner has not taken the signs down yet. Is it only a matter of time before another empty franchise building sits completely empty? It almost is now (Courtesy). There has not been any new CHRYSLERS or DODGES on the lot for some time. Just what we need on that end of town, more vacant businesses.

I agree with patrickkaz
I went there twice to buy a new vehicle. The first time I was given such a high price for the vehicle that I could give the suggested price at any other dealer and save thousands of dollars.
Next time, I was told that I won one of his contest, and when I went there, the prize was nothing like they said it was. In fact it was a con game. I told him then that he might as well close up, because if you can not trust his marketing, you can not trust him with your business.

Does anyone have any idea why the sign in the front has a Cleveland number on it for the Sheriff's Auction? Why is this not being handled by the local offices, seem to me if moneys are owed that they would want to keep it local so that no moneys are paid out to anyone not in Portage County. Does it have something to do with the bank that is owed?

When i drive on that end of Main Street, it reminds me of a ghost town. Its really sad to see all the empty space down there. I hope the economy turns around and does it quickly.

It is sad that it had to go to sheriff sale. Hopefully someone will buy it. I know I had to go to a GMC Buick Pontiac dealer in Green and we are selling a lot of cars, so I know a car dealer could do well ther with the right managment.
