The official transfer of Alpha Enterprises Inc. assets to Habitat for Humanity of Portage County recently took place at the Habitat Office.

Helen Kravetz, president of the Alpha board of trustees, said the board has searched for the last couple of years to find an agency that shares Alpha's values and mission.

"The Alpha board is confident that the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Portage County is in keeping with what our mission is," she said.

"The recent creation of the Habitat ReStore will provide the people that are served by Alpha a place where they can find low cost items for their homes. The Alpha board encourages longtime supporters and donors of Alpha to continue to support the Alpha mission by donating items to the Habitat ReStore. This historic event for both organizations is a win-win for Portage County residents," Kravetz said.

Mary Shaffer, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Portage County, said it took several months to come to the decision.

"We will do our best to keep the Alpha name prominent in our organization," she said, adding that Habitat is creating an Alpha section in its ReStore.

The asset transfer includes the property at 262 W. Cedar Ave. in Ravenna, a box truck, Alpha store inventory and cash. Habitat has no immediate plans for the West Cedar property.

Habitat board President Denny Mervis announced that a portion of the cash received in the asset transfer will be used to create a Habitat for Humanity of Portage County Endowment Fund.

"We are grateful to the Alpha board for making this possible," he said. "The creation of this endowment fund is another way to preserve the 44 years of Alpha's contributions to the Portage County community."

At the Habitat ReStore personnel raised a banner identifying the furniture section of the ReStore as the Alpha section.

Alpha, founded in 1964 as a nonprofit 501C agency, has operated a thrift store to provide low cost donated items available to low income individuals and families in Portage County.

Habitat for Humanity of Portage County is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry that provides decent and affordable housing for God's people in need in Portage County.

Founded in 1988, the affiliate has built or renovated 49 houses throughout Portage County. In 2008 the affiliate has completed one renovation in Ravenna and currently has four houses under construction on Hillcrest Drive in Atwater.

Well isn't Habit for Humanity a non profit organization? It seems there is some profit here. Like I said before, just follow the money and you will see what kind of an organization this is.
