One for the Books: Photography

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

If you're looking for a special gift, there is nothing to compare with the beautiful photography published by National Geographic Books.

"Sacred Places of a Lifetime: 500 of the World's Most Peaceful and Powerful Destinations" is a companion to last year's "Journeys of Lifetime," but it also stands alone. This is such a beautiful book! It takes us to special places -- ancient and modern, famous and lesser known sites -- that lift the human spirit. The destinations include sacred landscapes, cradles of faith, shrines, temples and churches, ruins and retreats. From the ancient Valley of the Kings in Egypt to New York City's Ground Zero, the book spotlights such diverse places as the Ganges River of India, Israel's Masada and Yad Vashem, Washington's Arlington Cemetery, Findhorn in Scotland, Wounded Knee in South Dakota, Ohio's Serpent Mound and the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.

We can read about pilgrimages, such as the Islamic Hajj to Mecca or the Christian visit to Lourdes, and learn about ceremonies and festivals, such as South Korea's Lantern Festival. Like last year's book, it also includes Top 10 lists, such as Ten Mountain Monasteries and Ten Sacred Gardens.

Each site has at least one full-color photo, a description and a locator map, and suggested travel information, with Web sites, as well as recommended highlights and side trips. There isn't a lot on each destination -- just enough to whet your interest. It comes with a glossary and listing of sites by religion and country. This is an armchair traveler's dream! 400 pages, HC, $40, 9.25 x 12 inches, National Geographic Books, 800-647-5463.

"Hubble: Imaging Space and Time" by David Devorkin and Robert W. Smith is a tribute to the Hubble Space Telescope and its ongoing mission. Hubble was sent into space in 1990, and since then it's been in orbit about 320 miles above the Earth, sending back "stunning, even mind-boggling images," say the authors. First, they tell the story of the Hubble and give an overview of the work of astronomers from Galileo to Edwin Hubble. They show a schematic of the special space-viewing instrument and discuss how it works, describing Hubble as "an unparalleled engineering accomplishment."

In his foreword to the book, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson refers to it as "the beloved Hubble telescope -- with its stunningly crisp, colorful, and detailed images of the cosmos." He talks about how, when NASA announced in 2004 that Hubble would no longer receive servicing missions, the popular telescope was saved by public outcry. Now, says Tyson, it will function "for perhaps another decade" to "bring the universe down to Earth."

From pictures of Saturn and Jupiter to images of stars near the edge of the visible universe, 13 billion light-years away, the book presents extraordinary two-page spreads that show colorful detail and panoramas of deep space. The Hubble Deep Field images "were the result of over 300 separate exposures of one small area of the sky late in 1995. They disclosed traces of some 1,500 galaxies, some as far away as 10.5 billion light-years," explain the authors.

I fell in love with the Hubble when I first saw the Eagle Nebula "star nursery" image in 1995, and I have been a blubbering fan ever since. One of the two-page photos in this book actually made me cry. In my online column, I'll give you a link to the National Geographic Web site, where you can download three gorgeous Hubble images for your computer wallpaper. 224 pages, HC, $50, 11 x 12 inches.

For its "Visions of Paradise," the National Geographic asked its photographers, "Where -- or what -- is heaven on Earth?" Here are their answers. The photographers present images of places that are remote and untouched as well as images that capture a moment in time. Locations range from Iceland to Antarctica, from the island of Bali to the Kansas prairie. There are 155 images from 82 photographers, divided by land, water and air. The topic is subjective, and I question some of the photos, but others I just love. A contest is now under way for photographers -- including amateurs -- to submit images that best represent their own unique vision of heaven on Earth. Entries will be accepted through Dec. 21. For more information, go to www.nationalgeographic.com/myvision. 304 pages, HC, $35, 11.1 x 10.3 inches.
