One for the Books: Christmas!

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

I have found books with a Christmas theme for just about every age and taste.

"An Irish Country Christmas" by Patrick Taylor is the third in the series about two country doctors in Northern Ireland in the 1960s and picks up right after the last book ended. Dr. Barry Laverty is the young partner of the curmudgeonly Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly in the tiny village of Ballybucklebo. Taylor again gives us a glimpse at the life of a country doctor, from delivering babies to caring for the elderly. The doctors scheme to help the townspeople, a new doctor may offer competition, and there's more than one romance going on in the village. Taylor sets us down right in the heart of the country: "His attention was caught by the sounds of a flock of bickering jackdaws on their way to their roosts in the big beech trees. He looked up as the birds tumbled across the pale grey-blue sky's gloaming. Their features were as glossy as the freshly currycombed coat of a black mare." I enjoyed celebrating Christmas with all the characters. This is a real charmer and even had me laughing out loud. Includes a glossary and recipes. 495 pages, HC, $24.95. Forge.

I believe "The Paper Bag Christmas" by Kevin Alan Milne will become a classic. It's that good. Two young boys are coerced into helping a doctor dressed as Santa Claus to cheer up the children in the hospital's cancer ward. One of the sick children is a Hindu boy who knows nothing about Christmas. Another is a girl who's been scarred literally and emotionally and hides beneath a paper bag that covers her head. The boys learn that the greatest gifts don't come from a store. This season-inspired offering is surprisingly fresh and well written. It's a wonderful, moving, memorable story to bring out and read again next Christmas. Very, very nice. All ages, 150 pages, HC, $14.99, Center Street.

Looking for a thriller? Try "The Spy Who Came for Christmas" by David Morrell. This one's a really good, tension-filled page-turner. The action is violent and it isn't light-hearted holiday fare to read aloud to the kiddies, but its fresh plot, likable characters and dastardly bad guys make it a truly enjoyable read. I couldn't put it down! 233 pages, HC, $15.95. Vanguard Press.

For a bit of nostalgia, look for "The Christmas Pearl" by Dorothea Benton Frank. In Charleston, S.C., a 93-year-old woman takes us back in her memory to her childhood Christmases, and we see all the details " cracking pecan shells, making decorations, preparing food. But in the present, her broken family doesn't know the meaning of the holiday " until the housekeeper from her childhood magically comes back to straighten things out. 139 pages plus 15 recipes to help you create an authentic, old-fashioned Southern holiday, HC, $14.95, William Morrow.

For fans of mystery series, I found three:

Agatha Raisin, the wonderful sleuth in the English Cotswolds, returns in "Kissing Christmas Goodbye," which is now available in paperback. This time, she's spending the holidays in a British manor house. 234 pages, PB, $6.99, St. Martin's Paperbacks.

"The Christmas Cookie Killer" by Livia J. Washburn is in the Fresh-Baked Mystery series. In Texas, amateur sleuth Phyllis Newsom is planning to enter her special, snowflake-shaped cookies in the annual cookie contest, but finds her neighbor strangled in a pile of cookie crumbs. 288 page plus recipes. PB, $14. Obsidian.

"The Chocolate Snowman Murders" is part of the Chocoholic Mystery series by JoAnna Carl. Murder strikes during the Michigan town's Winter Arts Festival. 228 pages, HC, $19.95. Obsidian.

"White Christmas Pie" by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a nice example of Amish romantic fiction. In Indiana, Will Henderson is planning to marry his sweetheart, Karen. But memories of being abandoned by his father when Will was a child are haunting him and keeping him from being happy. And Will is jealous of Karen's ex-boyfriend, who keeps hanging around her. Can the truth come out in time for a happy Christmas " and a happy wedding? Also appropriate for young adults. 300 pages, PB, $10.97, Barbour Publishing.

"Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances" is aimed specifically at teens. It includes three funny, interconnected tales of teen friendship and young love written by award-winning author John Green and best-selling authors Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle. 352 pages, PB, $9.99. Speak.

For ages 5 to 10 and anyone who appreciates beautiful drawings, "Christmas Cookies: Bite-Size Holiday Lessons" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal has gorgeous colorful illustrations by Jane Dyer. This is a sequel to their "Cookies." Again, Rosenthal defines words in terms of cookies " for example, "PROSPERITY means, My goodness. Just look at all these cookies!" It's a gentle book with colorful illustrations so pretty I love to look at them again and again. It includes a cookie recipe. 40 pages, HC, $12.99, 9.9 x 9.8 inches, HarperCollins.

"It's Christmas!" by Jack Prelutsky features pictures by Marylin Hafner. The Level 3 "I Can Read!" Book contains a dozen poems surrounded by cartoon-like ink and watercolor illustrations. Prelutsky's silly rhymes are as charming as ever and had me laughing out loud. The poems are about Santa, finding a Christmas tree, sending cards, and writing a letter to Santa listing requests: "And I'd like a hippopotamus,/ a trumpet, and a drum,/ I could use a half a dollar/ and a million sticks of gum." Ages 4 to 8. 48 pages, HC, $16.99, 6.25 x 9.25 inches, HarperCollins.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good book!
