Three very different memoirs offer a variety of emotions and experiences from women searching for a home, for happiness and for the meaning of life.
Kim Sunée's popular memoir "Trail of Crumbs: Hunger, Love, and the Search for Home" is now out in paperback. Her story begins at the age of 3, when she is abandoned by her mother in South Korea. She is taken to an orphanage and later adopted by a New Orleans couple. As an adult, she travels -- wow, does she ever. She searches for her ancestry in South Korea. She treks around the United States, France, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, China and Hong Kong. She opens a poetry bookshop on an island in Paris. In Sweden, she falls in love with a married man, and much of the book involves the drama of that relationship. And everywhere she goes, she finds inspiration in the local food: "Food has the power to ground and comfort in times of disarray." In China, she tries the soup: "I dip in the spoon and pull out a black marbled egg-shaped object. I bring it closer to see that it's furry. I plunge it back in before anyone sees me." In Europe: "I break off yellow flowers from the young squash that I will stuff tomorrow with goat cheese and pluck fresh mint leaves for a tea custard recipe I dreamed I would make."
This is a book to be read leisurely. Her writing is intimate and often journal-like. Whole sections of her prose read like poetry, as when she describes waiting to be adopted in the orphanage: "Lined up like rows of fruit for sale, we're ... expecting someone, anyone, to come and press on our skins to test for ripeness and cart us home." It's a great read for armchair travelers, cooks, and anyone who loves words. I grew impatient with her about 3/4 of the way through the book, but there's no denying that she can put words together beautifully. Oh, and there are lots of recipes.
"Sage-ing While Age-ing" is something like the 11th book by actress Shirley MacLaine, and it too is now available in paperback. As in most of her other works, she mixes her biographical experiences in the world of show biz with her spiritual quests; for a long time now, she has been one of the most outspoken voices in the study of metaphysics. In fact, she puts a ton of metaphysical resource material in here. She discusses quantum physics, science, numerology, time, the nature of reality, prayer, UFOs and "star beings," Earth's secrets and mysteries, ancient texts, American history ("Most of our Founding Fathers ... were metaphysically and spiritually motivated"), reincarnation and karma, diet ("I've given up pasta and bread and am not happy about it at all"), modern medicine and alternative therapies ("Microbes and viruses cannot exist in an alkaline body"), yoga, and even the importance of teeth. She talks about synchronicity quite a bit: "It is a perceived connection between two or more objects or events or persons without any recognizable cause." For example, "for no apparent reason you suddenly remember a friend you have not thought of or heard from in years, and just then the telephone rings and the voice on the other end belongs to that person," she writes. She asks fascinating questions about the origins of man and predicts that a global change is coming, bringing spiritual understanding and healing.
And all of this is tempered by her growing older and, maybe, wiser. "I have been a questioner all my life -- sometimes irritatingly so," she writes, and "It is time for the curtain of ridicule, derision, and denial to come down." Some people think she's just plain nutty, but I've always found her refreshingly candid. She certainly presents thought-provoking ideas: "Life ... is meant to enable each of us souls to learn who we are and why we act the way we do," she writes. "Everything isn't always meant to be light and love. The dark times, the conflicts, that's where real learning can happen."
"The Heartbreak Diet: A Story of Family, Fidelity and Starting Over" by Thorina Rose is a memoir in the form of a graphic novel for grown-ups with simple black and white drawings -- and adult language and situations. It's a funny, touching account of the author's marriage and divorce. Rose recalls the first time she met her husband, their love life, traveling the world together, their marriage, having two kids and gradually growing apart. After she discovers that her husband has cheated on her, she seeks advice and tries everything she can to get him back. After the divorce, she has to pick up the pieces of her life -- and her broken image of herself: "I've been seeing myself through his eyes for so long now, I need to learn to see myself ... undistorted." She faces being a single mom, dating again, and finding encouragement from her recurring "chorus" of often-humorous friends.
The author features "words of wise women," empowering advice from famous women such as Shelley Winters -- "All marriages are happy. It's trying to live together afterward that causes all the problems." -- and Eleanor Roosevelt -- "You gain strength, courage, and confidence in every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along." And the book ends on a positive note. It's a quick read. I've enjoyed it a couple of times, and I'll probably read it again.

I want to thank everyone for the kind words and prayers following the unexpected death of my brother Tom earlier this month. Tom was one of the most avid readers I ever knew. Just like our parents, my brothers and I have always been readers, interested in everything and always eager to learn more. Since he was a toddler, Tom, like me, could often be found sitting in a corner with his nose in a book.
A local memorial service is tentatively planned for April 4; I will update my blog when I know more. Please keep praying for his wife, Evelyn, and their daughter and son, Denise and Brent.
