A little local history about downtown Kent: When I was a kid, Fred Bechtle ran a news stand and cigar shop on South Water Street, across from what is now Woodsy's Music. Fred was a gentleman and looked the part, with his high, stiff-collared shirts, vests, always a suit and tie and polished, patent-leather shoes. Fred owned an ornate cigar store Indian that stood in front of the store during business hours but went inside at closing time with Fred's help. Fred went to his just reward many years ago. I'm not sure about the Indian, but if given the opportunity to do so, I would nominate Fred Bechtle's wooden Indian to be our next mayor. Paul Craven Kent Comments
