Let's take a look at some of the wonderful children's picture books now available.
I especially love two recent books written by award-winning author Kate DiCamillo. In her "Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken," brave hen Louise proves that "chicken" does not mean "cowardly." "Louise longed for adventure," so she leaves the companionship and comfort of the hen house and finds adventures at sea with pirates, in the circus as a high-wire walker, and in a Far Eastern bazaar, where she's hen-napped. She encounters danger, but also finds the courage and intelligence to escape and return to the hen house. In chapter four, after she returns home the third time, she finally tells her tales to the other hens, introducing them all to a sense of freedom and adventure. There are plenty of colorful characters in the cartoon-like ink and watercolor illustrations by Harry Bliss, which are filled with a quiet, lovable humor. For ages 4 to 8.
DiCamillo's "Mercy Watson Thinks Like a Pig" is the fifth in the comic series about porcine wonder Mercy the pig, who loves buttered toast, and the other returning characters. In this new adventure, Mercy is being pursued by an animal control officer because she ate the neighbor's pansies. Mercy doesn't outwit anybody, but still manages to get home in time for toast and butter. The book is funny, giggly and silly. Chris Van Dusen again offers hilarious, bold, brightly colored illustrations that almost glow. I just love all the Mercy Watson books. A chapter book for readers in early grades.
"Betsy B. Little" is written in very nice rhyme by Anne McEvoy of Cleveland. Betsy is a young giraffe who is 11 feet tall. She dreams of being a ballerina, but everyone tells her she's too tall. In fact, she seems to be too tall for everything. So she finds "her own way of reaching her star" in the book's very nice ending. The giraffe interacts with other animals, plays chess and rides a bike, and there are curious things in the pictures for children to find, such as a rhino driving a bus, an ostrich wearing leg warmers, and birds holding Betsy's book open. The illustrations by Jacqueline Rogers are in splotchy watercolors that give them a sense of energy and movement, and the pictures of the animals are funny. The book is overly tall, like Betsy, and its message is helpful. For ages 6 to 7.
"Boo Hoo Bird," written and illustrated by Jeremy Tankard, is a sequel to his "Grumpy Bird." Bird and Raccoon have fun playing catch until Bird gets bonked in the head by the ball. He starts to cry, and Raccoon and his other friends try to make him feel better, with a kiss, a hug, a bandage, cookies, another game and their own tears of sympathy. The large, simple illustrations in ink and digital media look like bright watercolors. For younger kids and anyone who needs a little comfort when they get a boo-boo.
"The Pencil" by Allan Ahlberg has primitive illustrations in acrylic by Bruce Ingman. Fans of "Harold and the Purple Crayon" will instantly relate to this self-illustrating story of imagination. The lonely pencil draws its own companions -- a boy, a dog, a cat -- which then interact with each other, and the pencil creates a world for them. When they complain that everything is black and white, the pencil draws a paintbrush, which adds color to everything the pencil creates. But when the pencil draws an eraser, trouble ensues. For ages 4 to 8.
Wordless books are a wonderful way to stir a child's imagination and let the child create his or her own story details. In "Wave," Suzy Lee uses spare charcoal and acrylic blues and grays to illustrate a little girl's adventure at the beach. She interacts with an ocean wave, at first wary of it, then curious, then bravely jumping in and splashing joyously until a big wave chases her back to the shore and leaves behind shells for her to discover and play with. I love to show these books to children and talk about the story the first time myself, then ask them to look for details in the pictures and help me tell the story, and eventually, they can make up a story all by themselves. For toddlers and up.
"God's Dream" by Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Douglas Carlton Abrams has graphite, ink and watercolor illustrations by LeUyen Pham. What does God dream about? People sharing, people caring, holding hands, seeing "that we are all brothers and sisters," say the authors; "Knowing we are family because we are all God's children." The bright, bold drawings feature children around the world. The illustrations compare the children with colorful quilt blocks that are even more beautiful when joined together. For ages 2 to 8.
"The Moon Shines Down" is a previously unpublished book by the late Margaret Wise Brown, author of more than 100 books, including the beloved "Goodnight Moon" and "Runaway Bunny." Brown's manuscripts were kept in an old cedar trunk for decades following her death. This one has been completed with verses by Laura Minchew. It is based on the words of the New England Sampler prayer, "God bless the moon and God bless me." The koala main character visits children and creatures around the world, who all see the same moon and receive God's blessings. The illustrations by Linda Bleck are in bright colors that almost leap off the page. For ages 3 to 8.
