Two people were killed and six others injured after a two-car collision on S.R. 5 in Charlestown, east of Ravenna, on Monday afternoon.

James J. Davis, 39, of Southington and Marilyn L. Hutson, 85, of Ravenna — passengers traveling in separate vehicles, were killed in the crash.

According to a press release by the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, a 1999 Pontiac Montana driven by Melody Hutson, 51, of Ravenna, was eastbound on S.R. 5, when she attempted to turn into the Countryside Estates mobile home park at 2 p.m.

The vehicle was struck on the passenger side by an Oldsmobile Delta 88 driven by Louise M. Davis, 33, of Southington. The vehicle was westbound.

Three LifeFlight helicopters carried three of the crash victims to Cleveland hospitals.

Passengers in the vehicle driven by Louise Davis were James J. Davis, who was killed; Billie R. Davis, 8, of Southington; Jenna M. Davis, 2, of Southington and Patricia A. Davis, 32, of Vienna.

Billie Davis, Jenna Davis and Louise Davis were transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna with non-life threatening injuries. Patricia Davis was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Warren, with non-life threatening injuries.

Traveling in the Hutson vehicle were passenger Marilyn Hutson, who was killed. Passenger Julie L. Hutson Pugh, 43, of Ravenna was flown to Metro Health Center. Her condition was not known at press time.

The two vehicles involved in the crash were mangled nearly beyond recognition, with the impact of the crash turning each vehicle around completely in the westbound lane.

Twisted metal, broken glass and random items, including bags of groceries, lay strewn across S.R. 5.

Rescue workers from 11 area agencies were at the scene.

Traffic was closed to motorists on S.R. 5 from Knapp to Rock Spring roads until around 4 p.m.

A large crowd gathered near the entrance of Countryside Estates, where family and friends embraced each other in support of the victims.

Rob Weaver, a nearby resident, said he heard the crash from inside the home.

“It was loud,” he said. “I heard a crash, then a skidding from the tires. You’d expect it to be the other way around — hear the tires, then the crash.”

Crews from the Charlestown, Ravenna, Ravenna Township, Mantua-Shalersville, Streetsboro, Rootstown, Newton Falls, Paris, Edinburg fire departments were at the scene.

Also, the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

You are in a catch - 22. Leave the speed limit as it is, people go over it. Lower the speed limit, people still go over it but hopefully they won't go that much over it. If drivers would just take a chill pill when traveling we wouldn't need to do anything to State Route 5.

Just like the New Milford - Route 5 intersection, if drivers understood who should go where and when traffic should proceed, it wouldn't be that bad. But you have cars turning left that go inside, some go outside and you never really know what you are going to get when you come to the intersection.

If you reduce the speed limit on 5, you will have achieved nothing but created another speed trap. We need real traffic engineering. Even with I-76 and I-80, this is still the corridor connecting Warren with Ravenna, and it's the main route for Ohio National Guard convoys. It would be in the best interests of the State of Ohio to improve this corridor.

We need to remove direct curb access to 5, just as it is further down the road near Newton Falls. Expanding the route to four lanes, maybe even with a median, might help as well. We need traffic lights at 59 & 225. Put another light on Rock Spring Road and move the entrance of Countryside Estates over to Rock Spring, and you very well could prevent this accident from happening again.

This is very sad! I have known Jim Davis since grade school. To hear he went this way is very sad. He was a great guy, he loved to work on his cars, as well as help others. As I sit here typing this it really chokes me up to know that your life can end so quickly. May you rest in peace Jim, your family will surely miss your huge bright smile. I know i'm only one person. But for all that knew you from Burton, you will be greatly missed. To Marilyn and all the children, Jim will be with you in your hearts and he will watch over you. God Bless all involved.

I do not understand why the State of Ohio does not take steps to do something about state route 5 my daughter was critically injured in a car accident in that same area at rockspring she survived but it ruined her life, I always think it's like I lost her that night there have been so many deaths on that stretch of route 5 the speed limit needs to be reduced at least to 45 MPH there need to be traffic lights at key intersections like rock spring,New Milford, etc. they could do this on route 261 so why not 5? I have witnessed accidents at New Milford with fatalities it's terrible. My Prayers are with these families this is a terrible tragedy.

That is one road where speed is always an issue. I had to go down 5 on Saturday. I was going my customary 5 miles an hour over the speed limit. Sure enough, some genius is riding my a$$. Then he passes at the worst moment and nearly gets us both in a wreak. I guess he really needed that 15 extra seconds he saved. Inconsiderate moron's are everywhere. Go ahead, pile up your car. I will drive right by your worthless heap.

As someone who lives in Countryside Estates and has to turn left into the park every night coming home this is very sad, but I will say this, a lot of motorists travel Route 5 at much higher rates of speed then posted. I'm not saying that's what caused this accident nor am I blaming anyone because I don't know anything about this particular accident. But I do know that when you have to come to a stop to turn left because of Westbound traffic and vehicles pass you on the right side of the road and fly up on your rear view mirror it can cause some uneasy feelings. Although a traffic light may improve the intersection I think in the long run it would only cause more accidents due to the high rate of speed motorists travel at. I'm sure many motorists can attest to traveling 55 - 60 and getting passed on Route 5 like you are standing still.

Everyone should take it easy and remember that it only takes a second for an accident like this to occur.

May those injured have a quick recovery, and those who perished Rest In Peace.

Such a sad outcome. My prayers are with both members of each vehicle. My Niece's friend's grandmother was the elderly women that was killed. I am in and out of that Mobile home park all the time it's always scary to pull in or out of that Park. A traffic light would have been nice. Night time driving there is hard. It's not so easy to find the entrance of the park. My condolences.
