The Mantua Historical Society and Mantua Center Christian Church hosted the unveiling of an Ohio Historical Marker on the Mantua Center green Saturday. The marker includes a description of the Township Hall and the church, which date to 1840. The church is the oldest Disciples of Christ church in Ohio. Tom Monroe and Norm Parks unveiled the marker, top photo. The program also featured an appearance by Ed Haney and Deborah L. Weinkamer, at right, who portrayed President James A. Garfield and his wife, Lucretia, a Portage County native. Garfield, a Disciples of Christ minister, preached at the Mantua Center church from 1855 to 1860 while heading what is now Hiram College.
