The Akron man suspected in hundreds of burglaries throughout the Portage County area pleaded not guilty to initial charges filed against him in Portage County Common Pleas Court.

Timothy Anders, 42, was indicted by a Portage County grand jury last week on three counts of second-degree felony burglary. Anders pleaded not guilty to all three charges Monday before Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman.

Pittman set Anders’ cash bond at $100,000, and he remains in the Portage County jail.

The indictment charges involved three separate homes located in Mogadore, Brimfield and Kent.

Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci said his office filed the second-degree felony charges because the burglaries occurred at residences, but the charges do not necessarily indicate the occupants were home at the time of the offenses.

“It means that they are homes where people are present or likely to be present,” Vigluicci said.

Authorities believe Anders is responsible for at least 135 burglaries in Brimfield alone, in addition to dozens more in eight other communities and three counties. In total, investigators believe Anders may have taken part in 300 theft incidents within the past three months.

Brimfield Police Chief David Blough said the investigation has uncovered as many as five or six possible suspects who may be involved in the burglaries.

“We’re continuing to investigate it,” Blough said. “We’re going to continue to work it until anyone who received stolen items or was responsible for the theft of any items is arrested and prosecuted.”

Brimfield police are working with the Portage County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement agencies in Streetsboro, Suffield, Rootstown, Lake Township, Hudson, Silver Lake, Marlboro Township and Uniontown.

Vigluicci said a pre-trial has been set for Anders on Aug. 21 with his case set for trial Sept. 1.

In the meantime, Vigluicci said he expects further charges will be filed.

Doesn't it appear that lately all the headlines say so and so "plead not guilty"? Well hello folks, what do you expect them to plea? They are not going to say "Yep, I did it". And go to prison for life or maybe even death. The real news would be if he or she said GUILTY. Which we all know is not going to happen.

I realize innocent until proven guilty, but look at all the innocent people that have been put into prison and found guilty? Hmmmm how does that happen? Not to say this person is guilty.

And AndrewP, I disagree with you. Everybody who is a victim here deserves our sympathy, cars locked or unlocked. That is absurd.. bottom line is, you my friend or anybody else should not be in or on my property without my permission.

Vigilantes - sounds good to me. I don't know, I still think an eye for an eye would really stop a whole lot of bs going on around here. If he is proven guilty, cut his hands off.

The only people he stole from that I don't feel sorry for are the ones that left their cars or whatever else unlocked.

Other than that...what a "shocker" this guy is pleading Not Guilty.

DoWhatsRight:

It does seem terribly unjust that with so many honest, hardworking people find themselves homeless, and yet bearing the taxes to feed those of this ilk. I don't believe in either punishment or rehabilitation for this sort of scumbag, favoring instead cost recovery. Let him be sold as property to the highest bidder.

Well not only did this scumbag steal from hard working people, now he is going to make these people pay for an expensive trial, a free attorney, and countless appeals. Now I understand why some people want to bring back the Vigilantes.
