Kent teacher was chaperone of overnight trip after arrest for soliciting sex from a minorJune 24, 2009
A Kent teacher accused of soliciting sex from a minor served as a chaperone on a weekend field trip after his initial arrest on importuning charges. Matthew Vogel, 30, of Akron, served as a chaperone during a trip to Camp Asbury in Hiram Township on the weekend of May 27 and May 28. Vogel had been arrested May 26 by Creston police in Wayne County for importuning after arranging to meet a detective who had posed online as a 14-year-old girl. Vogel teaches seventh- and eighth-grade students at Stanton Middle School, and he was among at least five teacher chaperones who were on the trip with about 90 or more students. Kent City Schools officials have said they were not aware of Vogel’s initial arrest until June 8 — after the school year ended — when Creston police arrested Vogel on an indictment for three counts of importuning following his initial arrest May 26. Vogel has since pleaded not guilty to the charges. Stanton Middle School Principal Tom Larkin said Wednesday police have no concerns about any inappropriate action or communication between Vogel and Kent students. “We have not had any students or parents contact us with any concerns of inappropriate communication or contact either,” Larkin said.
