ROOTSTOWN — A badly beaten elderly man was taken by a medical helicopter to Akron City Hospital after he was assaulted at his home. The four people charged in the crime are in the Portage County jail waiting to be arraigned.

The victim was attacked at his Tallmadge Road home early Thursday morning. His name was not being released immediately.

Portage County Sheriff David Doak said Jodi Fetty, 27, of 3647 McClintocksburg Road, Diamond, approached the man’s home at approximately 2:30 a.m. and told the resident she was having car problems and asked to use his telephone.

While she was using the phone, two men appeared on his porch and the resident went out to see what was going on.

The suspects — identified as Cortez Oliver, 20, of Fairlawn, and Jonathan Dukes, 23, of 3865 Blake Avenue, Ravenna — then allegedly beat the man.

Doak said the suspects entered the home and stole numerous coins from the victim’s coin collection. They then fled the scene in a vehicle driven by Darrell L. Dukes, 21, of 3075 S.R. 59, Ravenna.

The victim was taken by helicopter to Akron City Hospital because of his severe injuries.

Doak commended the work by the off-duty Ravenna police officer who was working security at the Ravenna Giant Eagle store.

“He was monitoring some of the radio traffic and when (Fetty) came to the store to cash in the coins, he put two and two together and approached her. She ran and he apprehended two in the parking lot. That led to us getting the other two later (Thursday afternoon),” Doak said.

Oliver, Dukes, Dukes and Fetty are being held at the Portage County jail on charges of aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

They are all scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

This is so terrible.
Does anyone know if there is anything set up for the family of Mr. Lowther????? Do they need anything? Can we do something? There is no reason to ever hurt a child or the elderly. I'm disgusted by this.

Mike, while I agree with what you said. These punks can get away with this crap, and they know it. For one thing, these little suburbs have limited police protection. I feel much more at ease having the Brimfield Police Department. I am telling you, these small towns better get off their a##es and get a police department in your town. YOU need it!!

IT'S OFFICIAL - MY HOMETOWN NOW IS GONE!

What in the Hell is going on in Portage County? I grew up in Rootstown but moved out of state about 15 years ago. I have been keeping up with the news and I just can not believe what is happening there!

This is my first post and I have to say that I am just beside myself with anger! I have been reading about all the changes that have been going on in the area. This old man having this happen to him in his own home, come on people. This is just totally over the line and it just has to stop!

Even if this man does recover from his physical injuries, how does he deal with it mentally? He will be terrified to live in his own home, if he does go back.

I see my elderly father when I think about this man. How would I handle and deal with this, if it was my father that this happened to?

I have watched as My Hometown has disappeared into a sea of drugs and big city crime. This just does not happen in Rootstown or any part of Portage County but yet it does and it's happening right before my eyes (via the news). What about you all that live there right now, how are you dealing with it? I'll bet the anger can be felt in the air, and it should be.

I am glad that I am out of state because I would be showing up at the courthouse with a rope in hand. Picket the courthouse, put pressure on the legal system to put these animals away. Not just these animals but in all drug cases, show the court system that you have had enough and stand together and demand justice. DO SOMETHING.....

All this started when the drugs came into town and the scum just followed it. Do whatever you have to do to get rid of the druggies and crime rate will fall. Make your feelings known to the legal system and demand tougher sentences in drug cases. Monitor all drug cases and bring the results up at the next election. You hired your legal system, you can fire them.

We all know that those coins were going to end up in the pocket of your local crack dealer. This old man's life has forever been changed for what, a 30 minute buzz by some scumbags. Who's next, your grand-mother, wife, daughter....

I know that subject is the talk of the whole town today. Everyone is up in arms, saying that nothing can be done. I think otherwise.

The cops can't do it all themselves and these druggies need to be reported and stopped. Get together with your neighbors and the sheriff's department and find out what you can do as a community to deal with this. Just be legal and be safe but do something and start off by asking what it is that you can do. I'll bet that the sheriff's department would be more than glad to accept the public's help.

This didn't happen overnight and it can't be fixed overnight. Just one step at a time by everyone who lives there and cares about their future. This is only going to get worse and this incident should be the straw that broke the camels back.

I apologize for this rant but this is coming from someone who wants to know that their Hometown is still there and a great place to live and raise a family. I am sure that everyone wants this very same thing.

Just think about this: You made it illegal for a person to set down in a lounge and enjoy a drink and a cigarette but you can't get rid of the drug dealers and all that scum? That's just backwards.

I want this investigated as a hate crime. At minimum, a hate crime against the elderly.

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this:

It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar rapist won't stick around... After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there ..... This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime..
