Richard A. Lowther opened his door in the middle of the night for a stranger who asked for help.

For his gesture, Lowther’s neck was broken and dislocated.

Authorities have said the 68-year-old Rootstown resident was attacked at his home last week after a woman knocked on his door and asked to use the phone. Lowther obliged, and while she used the phone two men appeared on his porch and assaulted him before stealing a coin collection and fleeing.

Shawn Lowther said his father has been rendered a quadriplegic as a result of the injuries he sustained early on the morning of July 2.

“He is completely paralyzed, without use or feeling from his chest down,” Shawn Lowther said. “If he recovers and there is no improvement, we are looking into long-term, fully dependent care — but we hope and pray it is not necessary. He has been receiving excellent care from the staff at the hospital.”

Lowther remains on a ventilator in critical condition at Akron City Hospital, where he was flown by medical helicopter shortly after the attack.

Police arrested four people in connection with the assault on the Tallmadge Road resident. Those charged are: Jonathan Dukes, 23, of 3865 Blake Avenue, Ravenna; Cortez M. Oliver, 20, of Fairlawn; Darrell Dukes, 21, of 3075 S.R. 59, Ravenna; and Jodi Fetty, 27, of 3647 McClintocksburg Road, Diamond.

All four have been charged with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony. Their bonds have been set at $350,000 and all four remained at the Portage County jail Wednesday.

Investigators believe Fetty knocked on the door at 2:30 a.m. Thursday of last week and said she had car trouble and asked for the phone. Cortez and Jonathan Dukes appeared on the porch, and when Lowther went outside to see who the men were, they attacked him.

A neighbor spotted Lowther lying on the ground in his front yard after the suspects had fled.

Shawn Lowther said his father had to undergo surgery to repair his broken neck.

“For a short time after the surgery ... my father was off a ventilator and able to speak and recall the events of the assault,” Shawn Lowther said. “Since then, complications have required that he be put back onto a ventilator and be heavily sedated.”

Lowther has been active in several area social clubs, including  Parents Without Partners, the Ravenna Moose Lodge, the Kent Masonic Lodge, the Kent Canadian Club, the Kent coin club and the United Methodist Church of Kent. His family plans to set up a trust in Lowther’s name so members of the community can donate to help pay for medical expenses.

Shawn Lowther said his father is a kind man of good nature who may have been too trusting.

“As many people his age are, he grew up in a more trusting era,” Shawn Lowther said. “He has been the kind of person to help anyone in a time of need. In hindsight, it would have been best to place a call for an alleged ‘motorist in distress’ from behind closed and locked doors.”

Even if they are sentenced to death, which I highly doubt would happen since the victim did not die in this case, they would spend a minimum of 10 years on death row before facing execution.

In the old days, when the law could not protect them the people joined together and protected themselves. I think we need to do this again. I do not mean Night Riders and such, but ban together and insist that people like this get what they have coming. I would like to see a death penalty to scumbags like this. Not only did they hurt this man, but they have now made it almost impossible for someone that really did need help to get it. Everyone will be afraid to open their door to give help. This crime was not only a crime against Richard A. Lowther, but against all of Society. Just think about your daughter running from someone and knocks on the door seeking help and protection, only to be ignored because of the act of these lower than a snake's belly scumbags.

We must ban together and remove the years of appeals at the taxpayer's expense, and the free medical, and free meals for years. These lowest of the low, should be made to work and to work hard to pay for the time they serve. Either that of give them the needle and rid the world of some trash.

I am praying for Richard and his family. He is a kind man and probably has never hurt a fly. He is a good member of the Ravenna Moose Lodge and we miss him. Please add him to your prayers and pray that they take care of the people who did this to him.

I hope all seniors listen to what happened to this dear man and NEVER open their doors to strangers. Or anyone you don't know after dark. I am wary of anyone knocking on my front door anytime.

To trusting his son says isn't that a shame to have to say that, we should be evolving as a race and become better people not worse! I wouldn't doubt prescription drug use for those horrible people. I might even picket outside the homes of those to blame with sign, we can't let this stuff go on anymore we have to take a stand sometime it's a MUST.

Aside from this man's life changing forever, the worst part of this is that they probably will spend considerable time in a jail cell for us taxpayers to support them.

Do us all a favor and take them out back where they belong.

Put them all out of our misery. They are worthless to society.

This man's life was changed forever over what was it, $185.00? There are no words that can be formed that can possibly try to explain a rational reasoning for this senseless act of violence. Those four individuals took it upon themselves to play God with Mr. Lowther's life, they didn't think about his family and his friends or the medical bill he would have left behind or if he would live to even see the next day. When sentencing time comes, I hope the judge remembers this.
