The search for a missing Ravenna girl had a happy ending Monday night when the child was found unharmed in her home.

Several Portage County police and fire departments came to the city to help search for the 4-year-old, who was reported missing from her home in the 400 block of South Prospect Street in the city at around 7:46 p.m.

The child’s mother told police that she went to the restroom and was gone for only a few minutes. The girl was missing when she came out.

Authorities searched for the girl for nearly two hours before she was found hiding at about 9:30 p.m. behind a couch in the living room of her home.

Police and fire personnel, as well as relatives, searched the house three times, said Capt. Steve Eatinger of the Ravenna Police Department said. A thermal imaging system was used and showed no signs of the child.

The Portage County Emergency Management Agency’s search and rescue team was activated, and assistance came from the Portage County Sheriff’s Department, Kent police, Streetsboro police and fire departments from Ravenna, Ravenna Township and Charlestown. In addition, the search drew off-duty Ravenna police officers, neighbors and area residents, who heard about the search for the child on police scanners and came to see if there was anything they could do to help.

Eatinger said it was unclear why the thermal imaging system, which is designed to find people who are missing or injured, was unable to pick up any sign of the girl. The area had been searched before, he said, and the frightened child may have been hiding there the whole time.

“I’m just glad it ended the way it did,” he said.

I felt it was meant as a joke. no seriousness to it. I think everyone is always reading into everything waiting and almost wishing to find something discriminative to be said about them. This is a story with a happy ending and with the turnout of volunteers and helpers a feel good story throughout... I'm sure no one meant this child should have had been punished it was funny. take a breath and maybe have a laugh.

Through all the bad things in our country right now, it is good to see that Americans can come together to help each other. I am happy this little one is safe and with her family. Finally some good news for a change. I bet this scared her poor parents half to death. I am very happy for them too. I wish them all well.

Very red butt right now? I think not! Spankings have their time and place, this is not one of them. Gosh. My son went missing at Sea World once and that place was shut down quicker than I could take another breath. Scary? Horrifing? You betcha. Red bottom? Absolutely NOT, reprimanded yes.

I am the Grandmother of the child and YES it was a scarry and horrifing ordeal!!! But Vydunas GET REAL a bright red butt??? She probably had fallen asleep and had NO CLUE what was happening!!! I do believe in punishing a child when they do wrong but this time I don't think she really did anything!
I would also like to personally THANK each and every community member that came out and helped our family search for her!!! And also to all the EMA crews for their wonderful job!!! It is wonderful how the community comes together in a time of need!!! Thank you again

"A thermal imaging system...showed no signs of the child."
I bet it would pick up her very red butt right about now.

Hey, great that she was found and all, but there's more than a little Keystone Kops in this.

What a horrible emotional and scary feeling that must have been. I'm happy everything turned out well.
