An Akron man is in the Portage County jail after he was charged Tuesday with having sexual relations with a 5-year-old in Mantua.

Jeff Clay, 18, was charged with gross sexual imposition after an investigation by the Mantua Police Department involving a July 23 incident.

Mantua Police Chief Harry Buchert said Clay is accused of having “sexual contact with the child.”

The investigation began after the child’s parents came forward when the child described what happened. Clay — who at the time of the incident lived near the child’s Main Street home — left the area shortly after the alleged incident.

Buchert said the child was examined by doctors at Akron Children’s Hospital.

A warrant was issued, and on Tuesday, Clay was charged with gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony.

“We initially contacted him, he made a statement denying everything, and more information came to us,” Buchert said, adding that Clay refused to take polygraph test.

“(The victim) knew him. He wasn’t a stranger. It’s hard to protect yourself against something like this — often the victim is familiar with the offender.”

Clay’s bond was set Wednesday at $100,000 cash or surety.

Glad the MPD brought this animal to justice. I hope this child and family find healing and complete justice.

Good to see the MPD still protecting the public even after the politicians slashed thier budget and laid off all the full time officers. Kudos to the Chief and his men for protecting the innocent even under tough conditions.

Some of the old school HUA good ole boy dummies in that town still think "it cant happen here". Well welcome to the real world Mantua. Better keep your cops!!

He is lucky it was not my child, one sick headed individual. Maybe we should also blame his parents, that should have gotten him help along time ago.

This is one sick individual. Apparently girls of his own age won't have anything to do with this loser so he decides to do this to an innocent child. Hopefully he gets to enjoy prison for a long time.

So very sad. This is why the Sex Offender Registry is a joke...the police chief even says thst often the victim is familiar with the offender.
