STREETSBORO — Mayoral candidate Bob Carothers received Brett McClafferty’s support following the 21-year-old’s withdrawal from the race.

His reaction? Thanks, but no thanks.

Carothers said in a news release that he doesn’t want McClafferty’s backing.

“I would like to thank Brett McClafferty for his public announcement of support for my candidacy and for his desire to help me, but I have chosen to reject his support due to our incompatibility on matters that are important to me,” states Carothers in the release.

“Even though we may share some common objectives for Streetsboro, we strongly disagree on approaches and methods to be used to accomplish those objectives. We are very different in that respect. I respect (McClafferty) for his abilities and good ideas, and I wish him well.”

McClafferty filed to run for mayor, but the Portage County Board of Elections did not allow him on the ballot because of his age. This prompted his Sept. 24 legal challenge of the city charter’s age minimum of 23.

A federal judge rejected a temporary injunction, also filed by McClafferty, which would have forced the board of elections stop early voting.

On Oct. 3, McClafferty announced he was pulling out of the race and dropping his civil suit against the elections board.

tellnitlikeitis,

The wikipedia article you cite refers not to state representatives, but to members of the US House of Representatives. You altered the text of the citation to support an incorrect assertion. Why? What was your motive?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_candidacy#United_States

Actual text:

"In the United States a person must be at least 35 to be President or Vice President, 30 to be a Senator, or 25 to be a Representative, as specified in the U.S. Constitution."

My understanding is that in Ohio, elected officials must simply be qualified electors, i.e., of voting age and residents of the state and the district, if a district is involved.

Maybe somebody can help us out with the pertinent Ohio law.

An Dl to quote your comment "When McClafferty is State Rep, we'll see how much funding Mayor Carothers gets for Streetsboro haha...... very stupid"
Are you telling us that Mr.McClafferty is that vindictive that he would jeopardize the community of Streetsboro's welfare by withholding funds because of a personal vendetta he has against another politician. And by calling him Mayor Carothers am I to assume that is what your prediction is for the outcome of the race?

Personally I don't live in Streetsboro so I don't have to worry about either one of them.

Main article: Age of candidacy legislation in the United States
In the United States a person must be at least 35 to be President or Vice President, 30 to be a Senator, or 25 to be a State Representative, as specified in the U.S. Constitution. Most states will not allow ballot access to people who do not meet the age requirement of the office they are running for.

I don't blame him for not wanting his name associated with McClafferty's. McClafferty's a whiny little jerk. If he had such a following why did Streetsboro vote to limit the age on mayoral candidates? The citizens of Streetsboro make a decision and he's upset with it so he wants to sue. Doesn't sound much like he cares what the people of Streetsboro want so why would they vote him in for mayor. And he's not old enough to be a State Rep yet either....I wonder who you would have to sue in that one to get your way?

Exclusion is political bigotry. We need a mayor and leaders who embrace all races, religions, creeds, genders and thought ......even if some of it is incompatable to the mayor's personal agenda.

Most of our Founding Fathers, parents, and religions have significant differences, yet they lead by "inclusion" , compromise, and ______________

It's my understanding that an unwanted political endorsement is like the cooties, and that the only way to get rid of it is to pass it on to a member of the opposite party.

Mr. Carothers, you still have the cooties.
