Three candidates are vying to succeed Judge Barbara Watson for the Portage County Municipal Court judgeship starting Jan. 2 — David Brode, Mark Fankhauser and William Nome.

Watson’s age precludes her from seeking re-election.

David Brode

Brode, of Ravenna Township, is running as an independent. He has been a county assistant prosecutor for the past seven years in the civil division. He served as a common pleas juvenile court magistrate for 11 years and was the elected finance director for Ravenna before that.

Brode is a graduate of Ravenna High School. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Kent State University and his law degree from the University of Akron School of law.

Mark Fankhauser

Fankhauser, a Kent resident, has had a private legal practice in Ravenna for the past 11 years.

Fankhauser is a graduate of Ravenna High School, Kent State University and the University of Akron School of Law.

William Nome

Nome, a Kent Republican, was a municipal court judge for eight months in 2005 after Judge Laurie Pittman won a seat on the common pleas court bench. He continued to serve as an acting judge for Watson and Oswick after that.

Nome is a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and his law degree from the Cleveland Marshall College of Law.

In addition to his law practice, he has served as an arbitrator and mediator and worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney. He has also served on numerous local boards and associations.

Nome was ranked as “highly recommended” for the judgeship by the Portage County Bar Association. Brode and Fankhauser were rated as “recommended.”
