Four local volunteers were honored at the Kent Kiwanis Club's recent dinner meeting, held at the Kent State University Student Center. They are Renee Romine, Linda Godfrey, and Ken and Martha Miller.

After a brief business meeting, Mike Hardy, chairman of the awards selection committee, took to the podium. He underscored the compassion and service of volunteers throughout Portage County and explained that local agencies recommended the names of volunteers for recognition. He then asked each of the members of the committee to introduce the honored guests.

Jim Dunlap introduced Renee Romine, who began volunteering for Townhall II Helpline in 1994. Romine has devoted more than 3,000 hours and has been named Volunteer of the Year by Townhall II on more than one occasion.

Joanne Maynard presented Linda Godfrey, who as been assisting at Happy Day School in Franklin Township for more than 10 years. Godfrey began by helping the staff with clerical work, but quickly realized she wanted to work with the children. After some training, she started reading to them and has been working one-on-one with them on the computer. Polly Germer introduced Martha and Ken Miller. The Millers have been dedicated to volunteering on a weekly basis at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Martha has helped for 28 years and Ken is not far behind, with 26 years of assistance. Their combined service totals more than 21,000 hours.

All of the volunteers voiced the same message, that they feel they have received more personal satisfaction in being able to take an active part in community needs.

Kiwanis members are preparing for the organization's "Night at the Races" and silent auction fund-raiser, to be held Nov. 7. Tickets, which include dinner and drinks, are $30 per person and can be purchased from any club member.
