Attorney Mark Fankhauser and Ravenna Mayor Kevin Poland came out on top in the two Portage County Municipal Court races in Tuesday’s election.

“I feel great,” Fankhauser said after complete but unofficial results were posted shortly before midnight.

“I’m very honored the people of Portage County elected me their judge,” he said.

Fankhauser, who lives in Kent and has a law practice in Ravenna, tallied 15,597 votes to 12,647 for David Brode of Ravenna Township and 9,461 for former Judge William A. Nome of Kent.

In the second, four-person race, Poland, of Ravenna, got 12,427 votes to 11,351 for Tommie Jo Marsilio, the Garrettsville Republican who ran against “the good old boys of Ravenna.” Becky Doherty of Suffield got 9,677 votes and Kent resident Paul Brickner received 4,842.

Poland said he decided early on decided to “run a positive campaign on my record.”

He said people felt he’d done a good job of bringing Ravenna back and “appreciate that I’ve been involved in the community for my entire life, not just the last six months.”

Fankhauser spoke to a few people at the Italian-American Club in Ravenna who hung on for the final numbers.

“I told the folks I’m going to make them proud; that I’m going to serve the people of Portage County and be a fair, honest judge.”

Fankhauser had kind words for one of his opponents.

“Bill Nome’s a gentleman and that’s how he ran his campaign,” he said.

“I am glad that the people of Portage County voted against negative campaigning,” he said of opponent Brode.

“I’m just glad we took the high road throughout the campaign. By the way they voted, voters said they weren’t going to take the low road either,” he said.By Mike Sever

The GOB's may be walking around now all smiles, but I would venture to say that will not last. You see they think this is all over and they can slap each other on the back and tell themselves what a great job they did and they didn't have to answer any questions and the machine rolls on. They are just like all over confident, smug, small time players. They truly think they are off scot free. But they have totally under estimated the position they are really in. The first question they need to ask themselves is when does a political conspiracy become a criminal conspiracy and when does a political firing become a denial of civil rights under Federal law. You see these guys have had it their way so long they never consider the fact they could be held accountable for their actions. With what they have done in this last election it wouldn't be the normal Portage Co. wink and node and they continue on their merry way. This time with the filing of Federal EEOC charges and what surely will be a Federal law suit this will be handled by the Federal Court system not their buddies in Portage Co. Thus, and independent investigation and review by none GOB's. Boys, do you feel the control slipping away?

Wonder if you can get all the telephone records via a freedom of information request so we can see who called who and on what dates and times. Wonder how may telephone conversations have been recorded? Wonder how may visits one candidate made to a L.P.'s home weeks before the election. You know video cell phones are a wonderful thing. Wonder how may Limo trips there really were. Wonder what was observed on these trips. Wonder what the trips were for. Ah, just more questions which I'm sure will be asked at some point.

You see these guys never stop to think that they are not they only ones with a network. What they consider to be the small nobody underlings who they have pushed around for years also have a network and they talk, take notes, make copies, and collect information and wait for the day they can be heard without fear of job loss or retaliation of some sort. No, may be congratulations are premature. Ah, let's not be a downer, enjoy while you can.

I too agree had it only been a two person race he would have lost in a heartbeat. He should be glad that it wasn't a two way race with just one female or he would not have to worry about showing if he has class or not depending on when he resigns.

In the last couple of weeks I have seen
Fran R,Victor V and Kevin P walking around with that GOB smerk on their face.

I wish any of them would have to face Tyrone Noling and answer some questions about innocent people in prison.

I wonder what their expression would be? or would they all pull a Victor V and chuckle or not lose any sleep?

When their days comes for truthful answers,I would not want to be in their shoes.

This has been said before, but here goes. On yahoo type in TYRONE NOLING and take the time to read all the sites.
It could happen to any of us.

With regard to the votes, look closer. If you put the ladies' votes together - there would have been a total upset. Because they split the vote, that's why Poland won. It's been proven that a man should never run against a woman. Had there only been three running, the woman would have one, thus, Mr. Poland would have still been seated at the Mayor's seat.

Well Kevin you will soon have the oppurtunity to show what type of judge you will be. A fair, honest and just person with a true concern for the community in which he lives would resign on such a date that would allow a special election to be held to allow the citizens to select the new mayor. This would also serve to show there is no behind closed doors GOB "wink and nod" business going on. Well Kevin do you have the integrity to do this??? And will council get at least a verbal commitment from your replacement to sit their butt behind the mayor's desk for 40 hours a week???
