s Clinton Howard Hobbs, age 94, passed away peacefully at home Oct. 26, 2009. He was born on Jan. 16, 1915 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Dr. Guy and Gertrude (Neville) Hobbs. He graduated from Purdue University in 1941 with a PhD in Plant Physiology. During World War II he was a plant scientist for the Guayule Project in Salinas, California, where the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture was attempting to use the native, rubber- bearing Guayule plant to relieve the national rubber shortage. That's where he met his future wife Olive Eddy Cory, whom he married on New Year's Eve in 1944. They had four children: Howard Hobbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota, David Hobbs of Marysville, California, Jesse Hobbs of Murphreesboro, Tennessee, and Melissa Hobbs Schmidt of Vallejo, California. In addition to these, Clinton is survived by 10 grandchildren. He taught all his career at Kent State University in the Biology Department where he enjoyed a well-earned reputation as an expert in plant identification, retiring in 1980. Since retirement he has been involved in the Master Gardener's Agricultural Extension Program, the Portage County Historical Society, the Brimfield Memorial House Association, and a poetry group. Since moving to Kent in 1945, he has been an active member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church on Gouglar Avenue. There will be a celebration of his life at a date to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clinton and Olive Hobbs Scholarship Fund in Plant Science, C/O the KSU Foundation, P.O. Box 5190, Kent, Ohio, 44242; the Nature Conservancy; or the Brimfield Memorial House Association. (RC, 11/4-5/09)
