Shalersville: Antique-lovers attend benefit

The Shalersville Historical Society has been busy since 2005 investing time and money to keep the township's history alive.

The group's biggest project has been bringing the old Peppercorn House, which is now the society's home and museum, to a useable condition. When the township purchased the property, it didn't know what to do with the old house. Representing the newly founded Shalersville Historical Society, Ron Kotkowski and Donald MacLearie proposed to the Shalersville trustees a plan to refurbish the old building with hundreds of hours of volunteer work and donated gifts.

The museum now houses displays that honor members of the Shalersville community. To maintain the museum, the society's members have held spaghetti dinners, given free tours and sponsored a porch sale.

The group's latest fund-raiser was a recent "Antiques Roadshow" event. Darryl McGuire, Mike Tontimonia and Jim Best were on hand to evaluate and appraise more than 250 items for antiques enthusiasts and collectors. Items such as a Weller china vase, Haviland & Co. china and many other items were brought in by area collectors.

Proceeds from the cost of the appraisals went to the historical society.

The society is planning another "Roadshow" in the spring.

The Shalersville Historical Society will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Shalersville Town Hall. The cost is $7 per adult, $4 per child ages 5 to 10, and free for those under 5 and over 100. Carry-out service will be available. The event is open to the public.
