OUR VIEW: Openings in Ravenna present opportunity New mayor, council member to be namedNovember 5, 2009
With the election of Mayor Kevin Poland to the position of Portage County Municipal Court judge, Ravenna City Council will face two decisions: the selection of a new mayor from among its ranks and the filling of the empty seat that choice will present. We hope council thinks long and hard when making its decisions. Council President Fran Riccardi, next in line to become mayor by charter, said he will not seek the appointment. With Riccardi apparently out of the running, the question becomes one of who is interested in filling the remaining two years of Poland's term and who can carry the majority support on council to gain the appointment. Regardless of who is chosen for the mayor's post, a seat on City Council will become vacant and it will be up to members of council to fill it, the appointee serving until the 2011 municipal election. There are many former members of earlier councils, including the current council, who might contribute much to the city because of knowledge gained through service and if interest is expressed they should be considered. The election of Sharon Spencer in Ward 1 and Amy Michael to an at-large position brings two newcomers to council who appear to be enthusiastic and determined to work for the community's improvement. Opportunities for leaps forward usually come for short durations and then fade. Council members may have such an opportunity at their doorstep. If so, take it seriously, please, and choose wisely. The situation offers many possibilities. Comments
